Just started research on our family cruise to Alaska in July 2013. Have narrowed it down to these two cruises. But most posts i've found are dated back a few years. So would appreciate some more fresh input from Alaska experts.
We have 9 in our group, probably 3 staterooms. 2 grandparents in their 70's, healthy and active; 4 adults in early 40's; 3 kids 10, 12, 15 next year, active and good eaters.
Main questions are:
- like the free style dining and kids activities on pearl, but sounds like westerdam has better food and services. What is your take on this?
- the inside and obstructed view rooms are cheaper on pearl, but as you get into higher categories, prices are comparable between the two. I hear rooms are a bit larger on westerdam, true? Obstructed view or balcony? Looking at ~$1,500 more per room for a balcony, worth it?
- formal nights on westerdam: hubby does not want to dress up for dinner ("I'm on vacation!"). Is the dress code required at all restaurant? Or can we get away with it say in the MDR on formal nights?
- glacier bay experience: both go here, which one gives more time and/or better viewing experience of the glaciers?
