Looks like a fun trip!

The drive from Healy to Kasilof is a long drive with potential construction stops, so it will be a long day.

Where will you be fresh-water kayaking in this?

Though the McKinley Princess Lodge has a scenic setting it is about 50 miles north of Talkeetna and a bit out of the way. If I were you I would stay in Talkeetna that night. The drive to Kasilof will be a very long day, probably 10+ hours with traffic and a couple stops.

On July 26th just to take some time off the long drive the next day you could head south later that evening and stay near Talkeetna, then head to Kasilof in the morning.

Although Mt McKinley is some distance north of Talkeetna they are completely self contained. The flight seeing trips are out of Talkeetna and you could do it on the way

Why did you choose Kasilof for an area to visit. There isn't much there except for the post office. Would recommend to continue on to Homer (about 60 miles).

Denali to Kasilof...

AS other posters have mentioned this will be a long day. You've posted the Google Map time for travel and that is based only on distance and speed limit. You will encounter "tourist traffic" (slow) and construction (slower). Also you should not be doing that drive with out making several stops south bound along Turnagain Arm for scenery.

I agree with Spacefry and believe it will be at least 10 hours (It is mostly a 2 lane highway).

I would presume they are going fishing in Kasilof - I have done that drive for several summers - from Healy to Ninilchik - more like 12 hours. And I don't stop except for gas, some quick food and bathrooms - I don't stop to look at anything tourist related, including animal sightings or mtn viewing - it is a long day haul and I wouldn't recommend it to tourists.

I would probably choose to stay right in Talkeetna - it is a cute/quaint town. McKinley Princess is a nice property - I have stayed there, but you are rather stuck there - as long as you are fine with that.

Good luck! :)

Yes we will be talking (wife and I ) about the trip from Healy to Kenai so we might redo that travel plan.

As far as freshwater kayaking we don't have any lakes in mind. What would you suggest when we are staying up near Denali Park ?

We might redo the Princess Lodge stay if it is that far above Talkeetna. Any lodging suggestions ? Has to have a private bath. We are flexible as far as lodging if it is comfortable and clean.

Brother lives in Soldotna so we will be spending time with him and his wife.

We also found the lodging that we like therefor we are staying in that area to do some exploring around the river. Any suggestions to check out along the river?

Perhaps Girdwood would be a good half way point . . .

When you are in the Denali area, you are staying in Healy - there is Otto Lake - very close to where your hotel is. You can rent kayaks there:http://www.denalioutdoorcenter.com/

For some ideas of Talkeenta, check out this site:
