Must See Places Anchorage to Fairbanks

My husband, 5 year old son and myself just got back from a very quick trip to Valdez. It was amazing....so much so that we are already planning a much longer trip for next summer, probably July. We will fly into Anchorage and drive to Fairbanks and then back to Anchorage to come home. I'm looking for info on what places are a must see on our drive. And is there a different route we could take going back to Anchorage to see more? What is our best bet for economical places to stay along the way? Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forum. "must see" will be different for each person depending on interest.

How long will you have?

We will be there 2-4 weeks...depending on how lucky we are with rates on places to stay.

If you want fun semi-rustic, Carlo Creek lodge cabins, just south of Denali National Pk, are nicely situated. There is lots of outdoor space for a youngster to run around:

I stayed there years ago & found the grounds very peaceful & although I was camping, the cabins are quaint, yet fully furnished. There are choices of en-suite bath or bathhouse.

If you want something a bit different, before you start the drive towards Fairbanks why not take the Railroad south to Seward?

Fantastic scenery along the way, overnight in Seward, take a day cruise out to see whales, glaciers etc, and then train back to Anchorage.

We did this and are now firm fans of the Railroad-we then went all the way to Fairbanks by train, stoppping at Talkeetna and Denali on the way.

Here's a sample of how you can drive from ANC to Fairbanks and back using a different route (see: http://goo.gl/maps/P6QIz ).

I've also added a "tail" down to Seward.

My personal favorite area in AK is the Girdwood/Portage Valley. It's full of a variety of things to do (see: http://goo.gl/lSnN2 for an old posting that discusses this area).
