7 days before going hiking in Haines

I have booked a 12 day Donjek hike out of Haines beginning 20 July 2014. I have about 7 days before then to fit in some tourist stuff with my wife who is not into the hard hiking that I like. There is so much to see and in and around Juneau we could spend the whole time there. But Anchorage and Seward look great as well. Some of the 7 day Juneau to Juneau boat excursions appeal to me as does lots of other stuff. Talk about spoilt for choice and too much to see. Like the books all say. Alaska is just so big. What do the experts suggest. should we do a day here and there with an air flight Anchorage - Juneau or spend the whole time in and around Juneau looking at Glaciers and doing a few training hikes up the local hills.

Welcome to the forums, Glenn......Will your wife be with you the entire time or just the first week ?......

Another option would be to split your time between Sitka and Glacier Bay National Park....or GBNP and Juneau.....

The only large airline that flies into SE Alaska is Alaska Air, it services Juneau, Sitka and Gustavus/Glacier Bay......so maybe something like this....Option 1:

1. Fly into Sitka from Seattle, spend a few days

1-2. Totem Park, Fortress of the Bears, Marine wildlife tour......

3. Ferry or fly from Sitka to Juneau

4. Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier, Shrine of St Terese, lots of hiking opportunities, renting a car for one day would be a good idea......

5. Fly or ferry to Gustavus (Glacier Bay)

6. Take the glacier cruise of Glacier Bay

7. Fly home on Alaska Air from Gustavus, or take the short flight that hops over the mts to Haines........

Or if that seems too rushed or expensive.......Option 2:

1. Fly into Juneau from Seattle

2-3 Stay in Juneau, explore the hiking trails, whale watching et al.....rent a car for two days....

4. Fly or ferry to Gustavus/Glacier Bay (note AML ferry only goes to Glacier Bay twice a wk)

5. Glacier cruise at Glacier Bay

6. Fly to Skagway, take the White Pass Railroad, or combo train up bus back.....

7. take Chilkat fast ferry back to Haines for you, or Alaska Marine Highway or short flight back to Juneau to fly home (if wife only has a week)......

Here are some links to get you started.......you could change it up a bit with staying longer or less time in each place depending on what you want to do and how the schedules work out......

Do a little research, talk it over with your wife......especially if she only has 7 days, you should really concentrate on what she would like to do during that limited time.........I would not split your trip by trying to add Anchorage or Seward into the mix.....maybe save that for your next trip........

Please return to this post with any specific questions you have along the way......there are a lot of folks who will help you with any suggestions based upon their own experiences........

I agree with mombear that trying to add southcentral Alaska (Anchorage, Seward, etc) would have you too long in transit and less time to really see all that the vast Alaska has to offer. Stick to SE Alaska. Mombear has given a lot to think about. Great hiking in/near Juneau. Personally I would favor something like a combination of Juneau and Glacier Bay. The day tours of Glacier Bay are really nice.

You can also do whale watching in Gustavus or Juneau, as well as a Tracy Arm day trip from Juneau (scenery, glaciers, probably some marine wildlife).

Hi folks thanks for the good advice. It has got us focussed on the best way forward now.

At times the task seems just too big a step to take.

Having good trip advisor clues has given us a good nudge.

The pre trip planning is as much fun as actually doing it.

I hope, Glenn, that you'll come back with a trip report. I am particularly excited to hear about your 12 day Donjek glacier backpack trip. It sounds magnificent!
