Kids on Alaska small ship cruises

Is an Alaska small ship cruise a good choice when the two children in the group are 7 (girl) and ll (boy)? Both are active and outgoing and love animals.

What is your criteria for deciding if it is good or not? Best.. good.. poor.. lousy... mean so many different things to different people.

What do you want to get out of your Alaskan Adventure? What "small" cruise(s) are you considering?

Hey Ken - we are taking our 8yo on an Alaskan Dream cruise this year. We have previously done a large ship cruise (without kid) and although he would probably have liked it, we think he will LOVE this trip. We've previously cruised on a small ship with him in another part of the world and it was great. Can't get lost........ If your kids are good travellers and interested in participating (not whinging and playing up) they will be welcomed on board by fellow guests and crew. Kids who show wonderment and enjoyment in their surroundings will open the eyes of the adults who are with them and make the trip more fun for them too! We actually missed having our son along on our last trip to Alaska and had a good laugh on the days we had kids on shore excursions with us.

Alaskan Dream do run "family cruises" which are especially tailored to be more child "inclusive" but in general, I think their itineraries are family friendly. I looked at the Lindblad/Un-cruises and found them to be a bit more adult activity oriented but if your kids are into outdoor stuff like kayaking & hiking - they will probably enjoy them too. Should make them sleep well at night :)

I would speak directly with the cruise line and ask very specific questions about what would be available during each day for the children. Then decide if your children seem to fit into this type of cruise. I am sure some children of eight and eleven would do great, but others would not. It is truly going to depend on what kind of travel personality they have. You do want to be as sure as you possibly can that is is a good choice, as these cruises are quite costly.
