excursions to avoid based on time of year.

The cruise we are on will be in Haines, Juneau, and Ketchikan the first week of June. Does it make sense to skip whale watching events this time of year? Also since salmon are running later in the year can we assume that bear sightings will be minimal at best? I just read where a tour guarantees a whale sighting!. I thought whales didn't arrive in Alaskan waters until later than June.

We sailed early June last year. Saw humpbacks in Seward, (MM Kenai cruise) Whittier, ( MM Prince William cruise) over 20 on Glacier Bay day from our cruise ship, bubble feeding group 8 times in June with Captain Larry and Orca and several other sightings from the cruise ship. All that said, there are whales in early June in Alaskan waters

Whale watches out of Juneau have 100% sightings of humpbacks. You are wrong on your dates. The humpbacks arrive in Alaska from April, through about the third week of May. they are viewable the entire cruise season.

You are way too early for the bear viewing trips. Only possible area, is getting rental car and spending the day in the Yukon.

We have whales that stay here all year round......so yes, you will see them in June.....

If you rent a car in Haines you may see bears while driving over the pass into the Yukon.....I have seen them in June.....even if you don't see bears, the scenery is gorgeous.....bring your passports to cross back into the US.......

The bears are out here in Haines around April, but do not congregate at the river until the salmon arrive in late July......they will be browsing in the higher altitude meadows and sometimes on the ocean shore turning over rocks, eating seaweed........you might one if you are out hiking on one of our trails.....but I would not pay money for a tour to see them, as it would not be guaranteed, like the whale watching.....

Oh wait, there is a guarantee here in Haines......take the tour out to Steve Kroschel's, probably offered through your ship.....he has bears, wolves and all sorts of animals.....
