Hello! We're a 40 yr old California couple who loved our one visit to Alaska (a cruise tour in '06). We want to get back and see the natural beauty. We like day-hiking a few miles, but need a place to sleep with indoor plumbing.
This year, my husband wants to do an "easy" vacation, so he's thinking Sandals in the Bahamas. However, I'd much rather go to Alaska this fall or next spring if I can find a simple way to do it. Is it even possible? I'd like to hear about small town or rural areas that:
- are relatively accessible (near an airport we can get to direct from Ca)
- aren't likely to have heavy snow/ice in October
- have lots of natural beauty and hiking available.
I'm thinking of renting a place with a kitchen and a view. Picture us sitting on a patio / balcony with coffee and a book for a few days, followed by day hiking with plenty of sunset-watching.
For restaurants, we enjoy pubs or mom & pop shops. Also, a nearby health food store or farmer's market / non-chain grocery is a plus. Or a bunch of smaller stores. Basically, I have a food allergy and can usually do OK for food if I'm not limited to Vons, Ralphs, Safeway, etc.
