Sedona vs. Zion / Bryce?

My husband and I are traveling to the southwest in April. We will have 8 days in the area. We are trying to decide whether to split our time between Southwest Utah (Zion and Bryce) and central Arizona (Sedona). Is it do-able to take in both regions in a week? We are thinking of spending 3 days in Springdale Utah, a day traveling between, and 3 days in the Sedona area. Or are we better off just concentrating on one area? Can anyone comment on how the drive is between Zion and Flagstaff?

Any recommendations one can offer would be appreciated. We have heard that Sedona is quite commercialized now. How does Zion compare?

Thanks!

Jackie

You could easily split your time between Springdale and Sedona. I think 7 days in either place would maybe be too long. Sedona is much larger and more commercialised than Springdale. Are you not planning to visit the Grand Canyon as well? The driving is very easy and mostly stunning scenery.

We did a trip last April - we spent 2 days in Sedona, 1 at GC, 2 nights in Springdale, and 1 night in Page. We even squeezed in a visit to Monument Valley.

We are planning another trip next month concentrating on Southern Utah. We wiil spend a day visitng Zion (2 nights in Springdale) then move on to Bryce Canyon (1 night), Capital Reef (night in Torrey) and then 3 nights in Moab.

Hi SarniaShutterbug and welcome to the board!

My wife and I did the same trip last July. I agree with the last poster that you should go to the Grand Canyon. You are too close not to go and it is something you will not forget.

The drive between Zion and Flagstaff I found enjoyable. I wasn't flat and full of corn but red rock and hills. Camerons Trading Post is a must stop. It is between Page and Flagstaff.

Zion is not like Sedona. It is not as commercialized.

There is so much to see and do in this area. It would help if you could tell us what you are intrested in and would like to see. That way some can point you in the right direction.

Enjoy your trip!

Hello, We loved our trip in this area, though we did Sedona on a different trip. If you love Zion, I would do North rim grand canyon. if you have early spring. we have been back 4 times just so much to see. best of luck, John

From the Sarnia Shutterbug...

Thank you to all who replied. As of now we are planning to spend 2 nights in Springdale exploring Zion, One night in Tropic to see a Bryce Canyon sunrise. I also read highway 12 towards Torrey is unforgettable. Then drive to Page and stay one night. Get up early the next morning to head to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Stay through sunset and drive to hotel in Sedona. Then we will spend the next 2 days in Sedona area. My husband and I enjoy photography and nature. We would like to do a combination of scenic drives (perhaps off the main highways) and easy to moderate hikes. No kids to worry about.

Just a few more questions, if you don't mind...

On driving from Utah to Arizona, would anyone recommend Alt. 89 over highway 89? Also, If heading to Arizona from the Bryce area, has anyone taken the Cottonwood Canyon Road through Grand Staircase-escalante National monument? Is it OK in mid April in a full size 2WD vehicle?

At the Grand Canyon, would anyone recommend one lookout spot over another?

All for now. Thanks again.

Zion and Bryce beat Sedona hands down. Sedona is beautiful but the other two are absolutely breathtaking - if you are into photography there really is no comparison! Another great option is Arches - also in Utah. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon would be worth while also - Sedona just is too commercialized and touristy.

The population of Sedona is 11,000+; the population of Springdale (Zion) is 500. That should tell you something about commercialization right there! If you spend your time at Zion and Bryce, and maybe Vermillion Cliffs, you'll run out of film before you run out of photo opportunities. And if you push yourself a bit farther East to Monument Valley, you'll definitely have some memories to last a lifetime. North Rim of the Grand Canyon would be icing on the cake. I'd definitely skip Sedona.

One caution, though. April still brings snow in the high country. I'm not sure how much of the North Rim of Grand Canyon would be open.

Sounds like we're in the same boat! We're sleeping over in Zion (1 night), then Bryce (1 night), and then have a night to kill in before hitting Sedona.

Any must-see recommendations between Bryce and Sedona...or a thought where to spend the night?

North Rim will be closed in april. Us89 or Us89A? Us89A is even more scenic and you'll pass (and visit?) Vermillion Cliffs, Marble Canyon, Lees Ferry and Marble Canyon, but of course don't miss Page and visit Antelope Slot Canyon. Photographers paradise. Maybe make the loop Zion-Bryce-Ut12-Torrey-Capitol Reef-Arches-Canyonlands-Monument Valley-Page but 8 days will be short for that trip and it would let Sedona and GCSR out. Of course it's up to you to decide.
