Best Itinerary with grandson

We are taking our 13 year old grandson on a trip next June and plan to introduce him to some national parks, teach him some photography, do a little hiking, and try to interest him in the great outdoors and treasure of our country. He has been only on trips to 5 star hotels in Florida, Mexico, baseball spring training and has little of this type of life experience so far. I originally had much more ambitious plans but was urged on the Utah, Wyoming, and Montana message boards to cut down on stops and drives, and build in more activity. Here are my latest two options.

Day 6: Buffalo Bill Museum, other stops around Cody, O/N Cody

Day 7: Drive to Grand Tetons NP 3 hrs Lewis Canyon, Mount Moran Lookout, Jenny Lake loop, Church of Transfiguration, Jenny Lake Visitors center, boat ride, O/N Grand Teton

Day 8: Visit wildlife refuge to learn about Sacajawea and Lewis and Clark expedition, O/N Grand Teton NP

Day 9: Drive to Jackson Hole 45 min shopping, Visit Million Dollar cowboy bar, Wild west shootout 6:15 PM, O/N Jackson

Day 10: In and around Jackson Hole, O/N Jackson

Day 11: Fly to Chicago from Jackson Hole

Option B-Fly into Phoenix and out of Las Vegas: Chico Hot Springs 1, Sedona 2, Grand Canyon 2, Bryce 2, Zion 3, Vegas 1 11 days

Day 1: Fly into Phoenix drive to Sedona 2 hrs, view red rock formations, sunset point photography O/N Sedona

Day 2: Oak Creek Canyon, Schnebley Hill Road, hiking, see petroglyphs, O/N Sedona

Day 3: Drive to Grand Canyon (2 hrs)- tour, trading posts, Imax presentation Grand Canyon: Hidden Secrets, park ranger programs, O/N Grand Canyon

I like option 2, The general route and plan is good. There are other things to see and do beyond or instead of what you have listed, but those can all be fine tuned and modified as you continue planning and preparing.

Forget about the sky walk on day 4. It's 150 miles away from the Grand Canyon NP and a total rip off. Consider a night or two in Page AZ after the GCNP and before Bryce. It's on the way and makes a great compliment to the other destinations.

There are no 5 star hotels at any of these destinations, but that's OK. The emphasis is on the natural beauty of the land. Hopefully he's ready for that. To maximize the quality of the experience, get busy booking lodging inside the parks. Many of the accommodations may already be fully booked for next June, so it is important that you get busy on this aspect and complete that task first.
