Where Is The Ice Cream?

Where Is The Ice Cream?

I’ve been pretty successful at finding great local ice cream/milk shake/gelato shops (no frozen yogurt please) on all of our vacations, but coming up a little short on this one.  It’s our tradition to splurge on ice cream while traveling, (not every day), but when I can find those great local places.  Not just gourmet ice cream, but also where everyone goes and you see a line up because they’ve been there for years and it’s pretty good.

Talking about places like Tropical Dreams on Kauai, Moo’s in Jackson Wyoming, Luv-It Frozen Custard in Las Vegas, Prince Puckler in Eugene OR, K&R Drive-In in Rice Hill OR, Salt and Straw, Portland OR (yes, I live in Oregon.)

Our route in Oct. is Phoenix, Jerome, Sedona, Grand Canyon. Page, Flagstaff and back to Phoenix.

Excited to hear your suggestions.

The Sugar Bowl in Scottsdale is famous. Had ice cream there once (it's far for me) and it was good. http://www.sugarbowlscottsdale.com/

Alas, the local place in Flagstaff, The Sweet Life, shut down many years back and the space is now occupied by a crystals shop. Too bad; it was really good.

I've always been curious why the ice cream shop phenomenon was never really a thing in Arizona. Seems like it stops at Colorado/Utah, and the Midwestern transplants never brought it with them. I can name a couple of places in Tucson for ice cream, but cannot think of anything still existing in Arizona like what you're looking for, aside from some very old Dairy Queens. Maybe stick to the sunsets, scenery and Mexican food.

I like this place in Tempe, but it's not what you're looking for and they haven't been around that long: http://www.slickables.com/

In Sedona, ice cream has always been more of a tourist thing than a draw for locals. The Black Cow Cafe near the Cowboy Club does a lot of business, but I would say 98% tourist.

There is a new player now in West Sedona, a bit of a hike, or drive, in most cases. Zainey's Yogurt is one of the new trendy places that offers several flavors and a variety of toppings that you add yourself, and then pay by the ounce. A first time visitor will be clueless about what their concoction is going to cost them at the register, but IMO, the value is there. The location is just west of CoffeePot Dr on 89A in an out building at the Harkins theater complex.

Between Jerome and Sedona, in Old Town Cottonwood, is a great Gelato store: Crema

I also love ice cream on vacation and i love ice cream when at home too...here in Scottsdale look at Sweet Republic, especially for some of the more contemporary flavors, and Lee's Cream Liquers for ice cream blended with spirits (amazing). Yes, for the traditional ice cream shop go to Sugar Bowl, always a fun treat.

In Phoenix Mary Coyle's is legendary, but i've not been and in Wickenburg the Chaparral Ice Cream Shop is truly an excellent stop.

Of course we have ice cream shops here in Phoenix! :) The Sugar Bowl is great, as is Mary Coyle's:

http://www.marycoyle.net/

The Sugar Bowl was frequented by Bil Keane and his family, and there are quite a few of his comic strips displayed on the walls. Both the Sugar Bowl and Mary Coyle's are historic, old fashioned style ice cream shops. Other ice cream shops have closed down over the years, but some new ones have cropped up:

Sweet Republic, in Scottsdale, serves excellent ice cream available in both "standard" flavors, as well as artisal flavors such as honey blue cheese, basil lime sorbet, banana foster, sweet corn, etc.

If you happen to find yourself in Chandler, you might try the Gelato at Angel Sweet:

And near downtown Phoenix is an old fashioned soda fountain that's been around since 1929. The food is ok, but the ice cream shakes, malts, and floats are delicious! Or for something different, try their vanilla egg cream.

You'll have to come tio Wickenburg then - which you should anyway, as it's one of the real, authentic old west towns, officially voted thus. And we have the Chaparral Home-Made ice cream, right downtown on N.Tegner just off the intersection. Right next to it is the famous jail tree where you can also sit on benches and eat your treat if you don't want to sit indoor. Loads of flavors, including some you won't find anywhere else, all home made. They also make great sandwiches and salads, also all natural and home made.

Wickenburg is at the end of 89, on 60, an hour from Phoenix. Don't miss it!

We brought frozen custard! Culver's is here in Tucson now.
