Best weather in Feb.?

To escape Wisconsin winter, we're planning a late Jan./Feb. trip. We're thinking of driving to New Orleans and taking a Caribbean cruise from there, then taking a couple more weeks to drive to New Mexico and Arizona. Our main interests there are hiking with beautiful scenery, biking (road, not mountain biking) and playing tennis. We have visited the Grand Canyon in the summer, but have never been to southern Arizona or New Mexico. Any suggestions on sites we shouldn't miss, and where to concentrate our time, considering we're hoping for warm weather, would be appreciated.

Hi crmcwolf! Yeah, I don't envy your Wisconsin winters! First, you should also post your questions on the New Mexico and Road Trips forums. Definitely plan on spending some time in Sante Fe; although it will be chilly, it's a wonderful place.

As for your road trip, it's quite a long ways from New Orleans to Arizona, and if your two weeks also includes drive time back to Wisconsin, then you don't actually have a lot of days for sightseeing. But that's something you can work on later, and in the Road Trips forum. For now...

There's a lot to see and do in Southern Arizona. Do be aware that January is usually our coldest month, and February is one of our rainiest months here in Phoenix. That doesn't mean it will be raining every day or even all day long, but if you're here for a week, the likelihood that you'll see some rain is high. The weather than time of year is very unpredictable - it can be in the 70's with the sun shining, or it can be in the low 50's and cloudy/rainy. We do still get nighttime freezes in late January, too. I don't tell you this to scare you off, I just want you to be aware, and not be disappointed if you see a rainy day or two. Take a look at historical weather from a site like www.wunderground.com, just so you know what to expect.

There is plenty of hiking in and around Phoenix, including Camelback Mountain, South Mountain, the McDowell Mountains, and many others. Once you determine where you'll be staying, you can decide where to go hiking. Another great place to walk and wander is the Desert Botanical Garden. And in Tucson, the Sonoran Desert Museum is a must-see, as is the Saguaro National Park.

Do read the Top Questions and Things to Do sections of each city's forum page, which will give you more ideas. There are also lots of festivals and activites around the city that time of year; as it gets closer to your trip, you can take a look at the local calendars and news sites. Here are a couple to get you started.

Agreeing that if your 2 weeks includes getting to AZ and back to WI then you'll be down to a week or so. It will be winter, though it will be much more pleasant than Pewaukee. Santa Fe is over 7,000 feet asl so if you're trying to stay warm, you might want to stay south of there. I agree that it's a very cool city to visit, but it will be cold. Don't overlook Texas as a place to enjoy warm weather too. Be aware that once you get to the warmest destinations in AZ like Phoenix and Scottsdale, you'll also be contending with snow birds from all over the north, and so cost of everything will be high.

Thanks for the suggestions and info. Didn't realize there was a road trip forum. I'll check it out.
