2 day trip from Phoenix to Grand Canyon/Antelope/Painted Des

Our family of 4 (2adults and 2 children) would like to do a 2 day/1night trip from Phoenix to Grand Canyon, Lower Antlope Canyon and Painted Desert in late Dec or early Jan 2014. We would appreciate any suggestions as to driving routes/trips and activities as to the best way to fit all this in. We would like to know what the best times to visits these beautiful places in terms of photography with sunsets or sunrises or best time to capture the beauty of it.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Two days is a very fast trip to see all that. If you want to add Page, you should add at least another day.

Make reservations inside the park at GCNP.

Welcome to the forum.

Sunset and surise are great in GC and Lower later in the morning but as Dez said, it's not a 2 days trip.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately we only have the 2 days. What would you you suggest as a possible alternative for 2 days in the Grand Canyon area.

Thanks again

From Phoenix, leave early and take I-17 North. North of Flagstaff, take the loop road through Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument. Along this road there is at least one overlook with a good view of the Painted Desert. Continue onto Cameron; stop at the trading post. Enter GCNP by the east entrance; stop at the many viewpoints along the way. (My favorites are Desert View and Lipan Point.) Continue on to Grand Canyon Village, and check in to your hotel. Next day get up early, walk a bit along the Rim Trail, possibly visit a couple of the overlooks in the direction of Hermit's Rest, and possibly a Junior Ranger activity for the kids. Head back to Phoenix via the south entrance/exit of GCNP. You really don't want to be on the roads around the canyon area after dark, so a mid to late afternoon departure would be best.

An alternative to GCNP would be an overnight to Tucson--Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, one or both sections of Saguaro National Park, Pima Air and Space Museum, Mission San Xavier del Bac.

Book your one night at the Grand Canyon National Park. Drive via Sedona either on the way up or back. You don't have enough time for any more than that.
