Quick family getaway before dropping off our son at U of A

We will be dropping our son off to college in Fayetteville (U of A) next week for his first year. On our way from East Texas we would like to stay somewhere special for a quick family getaway...a last Hoorah...for a couple of nights. Any suggestions for a family friendly/nice vacation spot for us? 2 adults, 1 college boy, and a 6 year old searching for a quick last minute family adventure/getaway that is also relaxing....Help!!!

You might check out some of my fav places. Some will be less appealing and more out of the way than others:

1. Eureka Springs is a great little towm. Lakes nearby, historic town built on a steep hill. Wild animal preserve nearby. Less than an hour from Fayetteville.

2. Arkansas State Parks excell. Don't be hesitant to get on their waiting lists and call back often.

2a. Petit Jean State Park - awesome mnountain.

www.tanyardsprings.com (upscale alternative to the cabins since the lodge is closed for remodel).

2b. DeGray State Park and Lodge - Fun lake and nice hotel. Right off I30.

2c. Mt Magazine State Park. Great new lodge and cabins on highest peak in State.

2d Mt Nebo State Park - quiert mountain top park - ask for historic cabins 60, 61, 62 on edge of cliff.

3. A favorite cabin a bit out of your way:

4. Lots to do in Little Rock

5. Can't talk about Arkansas without mentioning the Buffalo River

www.nps.gov/buff/

www.buffaloriver.com Buffalo River Outdoor Center is a fun place with cabins and canopy zip line (6 year old too young unfortunately). The river is floatable but not near cabins. Would have to go way down stream to get on river but worth looking at.

6, Hot Springs lakes – always great in summer.

You might look at Mountain Harbor on Lake Ouachita

Plan on spending a night or two at Inn at the Mill when you are around Fayetteville. Good luck.

Inn at the Mill @ 3906 Greathouse Springs Road, Johnson, AR 479 - 443 - 1800.

Agree with Axle on the Inn at the Mill but don't expect an enchanted forest setting. Unfortunately urban America has completely surrounded the old mill but what they do is still great. The Inn is reasonably priced and a great value - If you can save some $ for their five star restaurant, James at the Mill, - it's one of the best in the region but will set you back some $.

jimjade's already given you great ideas. I'll add that if you get anywhere near Gentry, AR the drive-thru safari is pretty impressive. www.wildwildernessdrivethroughsafari.com

There is a botanical garden over in Springdale that was quite nice. Has a kids section as well. www.bgozarks.org

Hot Springs can be as busy or laid back as you want it to be. www.hotsprings.org
