Help with Fly Drive to America in September

Hi all! We need your help.

We are planning a fly drive holiday to America in September on the West Coast. Starting at San Fran on the 8th September and ending in Las Vegas and returning to the Uk on the 22nd. We have no idea where to go and what would be the best places to stay at? There are going to be 6 of us traveling.

I have read some terrible reviews on some motels and hotels and am now very worried.

What should we expect the weather to be like as we are getting completely mixed opinions from people.

Your help would be great! Thank you! Natasha

Is it 6 adults or adults and children? What do you enjoy doing? What motels and hotels have you looked at? What is your budget for hotels?

There are many post on California driving trips - you can do some searches - but a rough idea of cities that many visitors include in their journeys are:

San Francisco

Monterey

Yosemite

The Coast highway between Monterey and Los Angeles

Los Angeles

Anaheim

San Diego

Palm Springs

Death Valley

Las Vegas

and the Grand Canyon

As far as the weather goes - September is usually a great weather month. It will vary quite a bit though as California is very large and the climate is very different from city to city.

Hi Thanks for this!

We are six adults in one car! While some of us prefer cities etc the other half prefer the more quieter things so the trip would have to vary to please everyone!

We had no idea with the hotels/motels - we were trying to budget between £50/£60 a night per couple? Do you think that this is fair?

There seems to be alot of websites than can tell you the mileage between each place but not the actual drive time?

IF I understand the present exchange rate then you are planning to spend $100-$120 per night for motels .

In general, that is a very low price, especially in the cities on your route. That may explain some of the bad reviews you have read.

You will find varying weather along the route as you are traversing different climate zones. As you stay along the coast you will find moderate temps from 70sFahrenheit going up as you go south. When you turn inland away from the ocean the temps will go even higher up to over 100 as you get to Las Vegas. I have just done the temp conversion and so it will be starting from about 21 to over 38. When the sun goes down ,or if it is cloudy all the temps will be lower.

Many folks have done this route before you so do a little searching on this site in the go box on this page an dyou should find some itineraries.
