California State Military Museum - worth a visit?

Hi All

Has anyone been to the California State Military Museum in Sacramento?

We would be making a trip to Sacramento to go to this museum. Is it worth doing the detour for this museum? How long could you realistically spend there?

Thanks in advance for the ever fantastic advice!

The State Military Museum is good but I don't know that it is worth a detour to Sacramento by itself. Maybe in combination with the nearby State Railroad Museum but not alone.

What is your planned itinerary? There are quite a few military museums around California. You might be able to visit some without a detour.

For example, here in Fresno we have the US Legion of Valor Museum which honors the recipients of the highest military awards in the country like the Congressional Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, etc.

Here is a list of other military museums and sites in California.

Our itinerary

2 nights in Santa Monica

3 nights in Las Vegas (possible change to 2 nights and spend one night at Grand Canyon)

4 nights getting from Las Vegas to San Francisco (this is where we planned on adding in the sacramento military museum)

5 nights in Sn Francisco (or 4 plus a night in Monteray/Carmel)

3 nights in Hollywood.

Any suggestions of alternate interesting military museums would be appreciated!

Near SF is the USS Hornet museum -

On the very slim chance that you'll be here in SF on October 11-12, that's Fleet Week. Lots of Navy ships to tour and air shows that weekend.

It's not a military museum, but you may be interested in this in LV:

Thanks for your great ideas, I think the USS Hornet looks interesting, also should be fun to get to as it says you can either use BART or get on a boat!

Unfortunately we are coming in September, when NOTHING seems to be happening while we are away (well apart from our first wedding anniversary).

The atomic museum in Las Vegas looks fun too, we like to find things to do in Las Vegas that aren't casino based, so that sounds like a fun thing to do.

Thanks for all your help, we are having a serious planning session (in the pub - oops) on Saturday afternoon to make a list of all the things we want to see and do. Maybe I'll have to find somewhere with broadband and take my laptop so I can still have tripadvisor on hand!

Thanks
