Is lake tahoe a must, we have considered Montery, Santa Barbara, Huntington beach any other suggestions would be a great help. We also need to book B&B or Hotels, again help with this would be great. Have a look at www.mapquest.com for driving directions, distances and driving time. This will help you with the travel planning. This website will offer you various hotels for each destination.

If you want to do the coastal drive then go to Las Vegas then Lake Tahoe is in the opposite direction.

Suggested destinations:(coastal route passing thru Los Angeles)

San Francisco

CArmel/Monterey

Big Sur

Cambria

Santa Barbara

Huntington Beach/Laguna Beach

Las Vegas

Use the above destinations to plan your trip, then play with the overnight stops to best suit your week drive.

If you have any further questions about accomodations in the above destinations then post in the appropriate forum to get better details and feedback.

Enjoy!!

Lake Tahoe is lovely but too far and too much driving. Remember, there would be mountain driving to go to Lake Tahoe. It's better to limit the driving since you are doing alot of driving to get to Las Vegas.

If you want, it's possible to fly from the airport(SNA) near Huntington Beach to Las Vegas. You don't really need a car in Las Vegas unless you are planning on doing some sightseeeing outside of the city,

Come back for a visit in California. There is so much to see and it's lovely year round.

I would seriously consider spending time in both Carmel and Laguna Beach. The Tickle Pink Inn in Carmel is one of our favorite places to stay in this area. In Laguna, we have enjoyed all of our stays at The Montage, Casa Laguna Inn and this past July at the Laguna Reef which is a Best Western property located right across the street from the lovely Montage. Have fun! :)

The weather will be beautiful in Southern California in October. It can sometimes be a little cooler around San Francisco.

I agree with Syrah Girl with her selections for Carmel and Laguna Beach. These are two truly lovely areas. Also,Santa Barbara is another California Gem.

daiseyday, I hope you've booked your nights in SF. We're vacationing in October also and found many possibilities for 10/18 and 10/19 already "No Vacancy" when I began looking at the beginning of August. Apparently this is a prime time for conventions in the city. That was less evident as I searched for lodging in Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay area. Hope all comes together well for your trip.

daiseyday, at the recommendation of PGdenizen and others on the forum plus the praise-filled reviews, we've booked two nights in the Arbor Room of Seven Gables B&B in Pacific Grove(between Carmel and Monterey). Amazing vistas and 20% off for age 60+.
