Anyone ever drive Highway 1 !?!

I'm going to be travelling from San francisco to Los Angeles summer of 2010 and am looking to spend about three days on highway one along the coast.

Any suggestions of great campgrounds, beaches, places to eat, things to see???

Start by searching here with "highway 1" or "SF to LA" or San Francisco to Los Angeles" to see the many (hundreds) of threads on this topic. This will get you started. Then, post your budget per night, what interests you.

The outstanding scenic portion is south of Carmel in the Big Sur area (search Big Sur). The outstanding single attraction is Hearst Castle (see www.hearstcastle.com )There are various non-contiguous portions of Highway 1, many, but not all are within view of the coast. the most scenic as mentioned is south of Carmel. You should also consider the private 17 mile drive (toll) between Monterey and Carmel.

First, in regards to has anyone ever driven Highway 1.

Yep! It has been driven before - you will not be the first - and in the summer it can mean that you will need Campground reservations for the best camping areas to stay at. One of the best places to look for places to stay is on the California State Park Site. This is a great site as it describes the campgrounds, etc. You can also make your on-line reservations there.

There are many beautiful parks. Here is one (of probably hundreds of options):

1) Drive from San Francisco to Santa Cruz - See Santa Cruz Boardwalk, elephant seals, enjoy lunch there (lots of great places for bowl clam chowder, sandwich, etc.)

Afterwards grab some picnic fair (if you don't already have it) and stay at New Brighton State Park for the night. This is a few miles south of Santa Cruz and is a beautiful state park - with trees, ocean, sandy beach,

etc.http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=542

2) Next day depart early and drive to Monterey. Go to the Monterey Aquarium.

Fisherman Wharf area for lunch

Drive the coastal area by Pacific Grove

www.pacificgrove.org/dirpages/beaches.htm

see Carmel and then stop and see Pt. Lobos (a must see)

Drive south through Big Sur area and end up at San Simeon. Camp overnight either along the Big Sur Route

Pfeiffer State Park

or go all the way to San Simeon and camp at the campground there.

Day 3:

Do a tour (tour 1) of Hearst Castle in Morning. Be sure to have reservations.

http://www.hearstcastle.org/

Then drive south to Morro Bay and see Morro Rock. Perhaps do this by having lunch at Dorns.

Continue down the highway to Santa Barbara. (Note: You can either camp here one night or continue and drive the rest of the route to LA.) If want to stay a night here, perhaps Refugio State Park

Note: There are many other options for camping - but this gives an idea. Best thing is to figure out what you want to see; take a look at what state parks are close by for the night using the state park site; ask if any questions on the forum; and then be sure to reserve your campground spots. Since 2010 do it about 6 to 9 months in advance of your trip...so you have plenty of time to dream, revise, and make changes to your trip plan.

Have a wonderful time planning and best to you.

As a guy camping California for 26 years I highly recommend Tom Stienstra's California Camping at www.foghorn.com $21.95. It is my California camping Bible. I have found it to be extremely accurate.
