aussies driving around california

we are coming to the states in March for the Kentucky truck show, flying to sanfransisco and hiring a car to drive around california for 10 days. We have no plan, but I would like to see Berkley. If anyone can suggest an itinerary I would be grateful.

I would love to feast on 'realistic' Mexican food while we are here. So any tips would be welcome.

Also is it worth driving to Santa Fe? By that I mean timewise (I know it's not in California) and for the place itself?

We have been to Disneyland etc. as have visited twice previously. This time we hoped to get away from the hordes of foreign tourists and immerse ourselves in the local culture a little bit.

Here's a couple of suggestions to think about in terms of planning your trip:

You might like to consider staying in Berkeley, you might want to take a central location like Emeryville and stay at Woodfin Suites. Its easy to get to San Francisco and to Berkeley and nice location.

For Berkeley, I would suggest taking first the 90 minute campus tour www.berkeley.edu/visitors/free_tours.html

This is a nice way to see the campus.

I'd then take a walk down Telegraph Avenue just to get some of the local flavor.

I'd then drive over to Tilden Park and enjoy Tilden Park.

If possible, reserve dinner in advance at Chez Panisse in Berkeley. http://www.chezpanisse.com/

After dinning you might want to drive down to the Waterfront in Berkeley and have after dinner drinks at Skates on the Bay

and then walk out on the fishing pier for hopefully a wonderful view of San Francisco. (hopefully means hopes there is no fog and in March highly likely.)

Since you've been to California before, I would recommend a day trip to San Juan Batista for Mexican food in Northern California. This is a historic little town south of San Jose, and good Mexican food at Les Jardins. You can plan to tie it in with seeing Monterey, Santa Cruz, and perhaps Gilroy Premium Outlets. This will tie you in with the locals a bit as its off the radar from the tourist attractions, but a delightful place to visit.

If you get to Los Angeles, another place off the radar screen, but excellent food with a live mariachi band is Guadalaja Grill in Baldwin Park. Great show, good food, and definitely off the beaten tourist track - almost all locals...

For local Mexican tourist street in Los Angeles, visit Olvera Street. www.olvera-street.com/html/olvera_street.html

If in San Diego, of course, visit Old Town for Mexican food...

This is a great place to see people making tortilla, shops, etc.

Here I would suggest experiencing "higher end" Mexican food at El Agave (great food and shows the diversity in the cuisine.)

As for Sante Fe, I like Sante Fe. Its very different from any place you will find in California and its specialities is Southwestern Cuisine. Very good food here. I would tie it in with a drive to Albuquerque and go to the Scandia Tram for a good view. http://www.sandiapeak.com/

As to if its worth it, it depends on other things you want to do while visiting as its a bit of a drive if its included in your 10 day itinerary.

Enjoy planning your trip.
