At the airport itself, Encounter is your best bet - its more cool for its space-age ambiance than its food but its food is good enough. It doesn't sound like you have an outbound flight that night, but just be aware that you have to leave the secured area of the terminals to go to Encounter, so you'd have to go back through security afterwards if you have an outbound flight. Encounter is in the cool space-age looking building that is supported by two huge arches sweeping over the building in the center of the airport - you can't miss it.

The food inside the terminals themselves varies from terminal to terminal. For the most part there's nothing that noteable - McDonald's, Starbucks, some typical airport bars, and a few satelite locations of some popular local restaurants, none of which are as good as their name sakes. And all the food in the terminals is way overpriced, so I'd suggest skipping them if at all possible.

If you really don't think folks will be able to wait to eat, pack an extra snack or two in your carry-on bags to tide yourselves over.

If you are leaving the airport via car, I'd suggest stopping somewhere along the way to your destination - if you are headed north, take Sepulveda Blvd. north from the airport then head a brief distance east on Manchester Blvd. to Paco's Tacos, which will be on the south side of the street. There's also a Baja Fresh on Sepulveda before you reach Manchester, on the east side of the street. And even better, before you get that far, the LAX In-N-Out burger location (a great fast food burger) will be on the west side of Sepulveda, can't be missed.

Or if you're headed south, take Sepulveda South to Rosecrans Ave., then east on Rosecrans Blvd. Tons of restaurants here before you travel too far - Paul Martin's American Bistro, Houstons, Flemmings Steakhouse, Lido, Il Fornaio, Macaroni Grill, PF Changs.

Note: Encounter is open only Thursday - Sunday evenings (see website). For a moderate priced restaurant, north of the airport on Sepulveda, consider Dinah's Family restaurant tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g32655-d37…
