Drive San Francisco to San Diego?

Hello fellow trip advisors, I am planning a trip where I will fly into San Francisco and from there drive to Los Angeles then San Diego (I will spend 10 days on this trip). I was wondering what are good beaches to visit along the way? Also if there are any other interesting things to see along the way? __Thank You

Here's a list of towns between SF and LA:

Santa Cruz, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach & Santa Barbara are good beach towns.

I'll let the So Cal folks direct you to the best beaches between LA and SD

The beach just north of Monterey is amazing. Here's a great place to stay right on it http://www.montereybeachresort.com Get a seaside room: the pounding waves will put you to sleep.

Manhattan Beach is a great beach. Check out http://www.theseaviewinn.com/index.htm

Also Carmel has a fantastic beach. Drive to the end of Ocean Ave to the parking lot, then walk. http://www.carmelcalifornia.com/

Drive Highway 1 from San Francisco which will take you through Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz (lots of beaches), Monterey (beaches, a top aquarium, restaurants), Big Sur (17 mile drive) and evenutally you will hook up with Highway 101 which will connect you to Southern Cal. Depending on how much time you have for the drive there are tons of places to stop over or if you have to stay on a schedule the drive alone is breath taking.

Enjoy~

One thing to consider about the beach in CA, especially the north, is that the weather can be foggy and cold. We have our heat on tonight! And the water, in my opinion, is too cold to swim in at any time of the year.
