Logistics...Plan, trains, & automobiles!

We are coming to Cali in late May for a graduation and then driving up the coast to my sister's house in San Fran.

We arrive in LAX...staying in Santa Monica. We are planning on taking a taxi from LAX to our hotel.

We will be staying one night in Santa Barbara and have decided to take the train there to avoid LA traffic and an extra day of a rental car. How easy will it be for us to get a cab from Santa Monica to the train station? Is Van Nuys the closest one? Will there be cabs at the train station to get to our Inn?

Once in Santa Barbara we will walk and take the trolley around so we wont need a car until the next morning. We have booked a rental car w/hertz. Again - will it be easy to get a cab to our rental car location> (there was one at the airport in town or one at the Fess Parker doubletree...not sure which would be easier.)

TIA!

No, LA's main train station, Union Station in downtown LA, is closer to Santa Monica than the Van Nuys Amtrak station. Its going to be 16-17 miles from Santa Monica to Union Station (the Van Nuys station is about 20 miles from Santa Monica), so taxi fare is likely to be in the $70 range. Alternatively, you can take a shared van (www.primetimeshuttle.com or www.supershuttle.com) likely for less money (with the caveat that the van might detour along the way to pick up or drop off other passengers) or from most of Santa Monica you can go to Union Station by bus - the Big Blue Bus #10 Freeway Express bus is the quickest way if it stops near where you are staying in Santa Monica, but there are other bus alternatives as well. www.bigbluebus.com If you do decide to go to Union Station via taxi, your hotel concierge should be able to arrange one for you.

The latter part of the LA-Santa Barbara train ride, once you reach the coast, is quite pretty, and closer to the ocean than the freeway--so the train is a good call.

Which hotel are you staying at in Santa Barbara? Many of them are actually within walking distance of the Amtrak station, otherwise you'll have no trouble catching a cab. Unless you're staying well out of town it will be more convenient for you to rent a car at Fess Parker Doubletree than at Santa Barbara airport.

We are staying at the Simpson House Inn. I think it looks like we may be able to take theState Street Trolley to get near it?

Looks like the bus to Union Street station and Amtrak to Santa Barbara is our best bet!!

Yes, the last stop on the Downtown-Waterfront Electric Shuttle at Sola St. is just a couple of blocks from the Simpson House Inn, which sounds like a gorgeous place.

The bus from Santa Monica to Union Station should work well for you guys.

Didn't we outgrow sensitivities to nicknames and that sort of thing around, oh, the 2nd grade? :) As long as we know what they mean, who cares what they call it? Cali. Norcal, Socal, etc. Heck, we had a governor who made the state's name sound more like a white vegetable than its actual name, and no one seemed to mind.
