Hello, kev176, and welcome to the California forum.

Reading your past posts, you say you are traveling in April, 2012. So the colder weather "all weather route" of CA Route 99 south and CA Route 58 east with Interstate 15 northeast is the common route of many.

Bakersfield, Tehachapi, and Mojave are good places to stay along this route. All traveler services available. Bakersfield is the largest of these in population, and is in San Joaquin Valley agriculture and oil country. Tehachapi is small town historic California, and is home to the Tehachapi Loop - where the train circles upon itself - as well as where many apple orchards have been (not so numerous nowadays) Wind turbines too. Mojave is home to the Mojave Air and Spaceport, where the Rutan brothers developed and flight tested SpaceShipOne and SpaceShipTwo. Offices with information and restaurant onsite. Many jets are parked there in the "boneyard" tarmac area.

Your choice, of course, in where you lodge. Happy traveling!

Here is another idea, but perhaps including more driving than you want.

Day 1. Leave SF, drive 4 hrs to Yosemite Valley. Tourism. Drive 1 hr to the South Entrance, then to Fish Camp & the Tenaya Lodge.

Day 2. Leave Fish Camp and drive to Lone Pine via Highways 41, 99, 178, & 395. 6 hrs with just a short stop, longer if you stop for tourism or lunch.

< Alternate Day 2: drive to Ridgecrest, about 5 hrs with just a short stop >

Day 3. Drive through visit of Death Valley including Panamint (views), Stovepipe Wells (Mosaic Canyon & Sand Dunes), Furnace Creek area + south (Badwater, Artists Drive), exit (Zabriskie Pt, 20 Mule Team Canyon, Dante's View) through Pahrump and on to Las Vegas. Choose the DV destinations that interest you; you can't see them all. Without stopping, Lone Pine or Ridgecrest to Las Vegas via Death Valley is around 5 hours. But definitely stop!
