Cali road trip

I am so excited to be going arriving in the US soon. Here is my itinerery.

Aug 26th Fly From Manchester, UK

Arrive LV and check into Circus Circus (upgraded strip view room) for three nights.

29th Sept collect Mustang convertible for drive through death Valley for 1 night stay in Lone Pine

30th Sept Long drive through Yosemite to San Fran

1st Sept leave San Fran to stay 2 nights on route 1 -----WHERE?? HELP??

3rd Sept LA

4th Sept back to Vegas, Circus Circus (upgraded Casino tower room)

6th Sept Bus Trip to see sunset at Canyon South Rim

9th Sept Fly home to UK

Now, I know some of you really hate the CC, but it is a cheap bed for the night, so it suits us. But if anyone has any helpful tips for us about any part of our trip please let me know.

Having never been to Vegas I have read as much as I can on here and there is so much info! Anything I really do need to know?

Tips for great dining (at any price) are greatly received.

Lone Pine to San Francisco (abbreviated SF) via Yosemite in ONE day? Really?

At the very least, I hope you mean leave Lone Pine on 30 AUGUST and leave SF on 1 Sept, allowing a full day in SF. But that doesn't do anything for you to have fun in Yosemite.

For my taste, this itinerary has way too much time in Las Vegas and too much time in the car. You don't really have time to experience any place else. But I think this is really the post you made for the Las Vegas forum, and folks on that forum might care about Circus Circus and spending half of a holiday in one place. On this California state forum, we're more about creating the best itinerary to enjoy your preferred destinations in the state.

You do know that your drive down Hwy 1 is over the holiday weekend, right? You *must* have lodging reservations.

Are you willing to make adjustments or is this set? Do you have any lodging reservations for California yet? You say 'my itinerary' and 'our trip'. Who is in the travel group? What do you like? What is your travel style, other than you like to ride in a car?

Your trip does not allow for anything other than driving and sleeping. Choose either northern CA or southern CA and see something instead:

One possible itinerary:

After Lone Pine drive toward Yosemite and say in the Valley- or Lee Vining. See Yosemite until late the next day and then off to SF on the 31st. Stay in SF 31st & 1st. On the 2nd drive down coast & stay in Cambria. Head east for LV.

Responding both to you and those above, I would agree to cut time in Las Vegas, go to Lee Vining, whole day in Yosemite, drive to San Francisco and stay two days. Then I would head for Monterey or Cambria for an overnight or two and head back to Las Vegas. That's just my preference.

I am a convertable driver and caution you that while a Mustang Convertable sounds wonderful, in this area you will only have the top down in the evening as you will need the a/c on during the day. This is the hot and sunny time here. Once along the coast it may be too cool to have it down. Another issue is that there is very little trunk (boot) room for luggage.

Indeed, it would help to know what your group is like.

Perhaps you can fly from LB to SF and rent a car here. Have you looked at temps on death valley?

As far as Vegas goes that is in a different state and if you do need feed back on LV please past there.

I would also reduce the number of places to visit in CA or California so that you can enjoy your visit Cali is In Columbia

I would strongly agree that a convertible for driving through Death Valley would be a terrible idea!! You will fry in the heat!

On your bus trip to the Grand Canyon do you get to stay overnight??

It is a 5hr. drive from Las Vegas to the south rim one way!

I would not enjoy this trip at all but of course it is your "holiday".

BTW although I understand that most locals don't call our state "Cali", popular song lyrics do so it is now part of pop culture.

You've got a lot of mileage in this trip. Read these tips by LDN_2009 who just came back from a California road trip. Pay attention to tip #3.

I think your trying to do too much in your limited time period, Yosemite is not a drive through desination.

Consider taking some internal flights rather that trying to drive the whole way in a limited time period. You can easily fly from Las Vegas to San Francisco for as little as $50 one way though inexpensive internal Airlines such as Southwest Airlines with 2 bags flying for free ( if you book yourself you can only book directly on their website, Southwest.com) or Jet Blue Airlines, 1 bag flying for free. Then you can rent a car and take the coastal drive from San Francisco to LA if you wanted to. You could also just drop the car in LA and then fly back to Las Vegas, again about $50 one way to leave. Usually out of Country visitors dont have the 1 way drop off fees

Or as said shorten your time somewhere else.

As said its too hot to be driving through the desert even in late Sept there can often be quite hot temps during the day, Sept can be one of the hottest times of the year, although it does usually cool of somewhat in the latter part of the month.
