The usual route would be

SFO - SF - {pick up rental car} Yosemite Valley - Monterey - Cambria / Pismo Beach - L.A. - Grand Canyon NP - Las Vegas - LAS

With only two weeks I don't think you have time for San Diego.

All school districts get President's Day off for a holiday, and some districts take an entire week off. Be prepared for bigger crowds that week.

Info about driving the Hwy 1 coast is linked to the Top Questions in the upper right. Info about specific destinations is on each city/destination forum. Without knowing anything about your travel group, we also don't have a clue about which destinations might be better for you than others.

Read the winter driving info on the Yosemite forum page, Top Q.

I assume you're asking the NYC folks about the feasibility of flying across the country (all day), visiting that huge city, and then traveling to another city in another state (all in one week.) If this is one week is supposed to be a multistate driving trip, ask the Road Trips forum folks.

Hi,

I know you guys from Oz travel a looong way to get here and then want to rush around and try to see as much as possible but sometimes "less is more"!

You could easily spend your whole 3 weeks doing a leisurely visit to the places you listed in the west. Be aware that Yosemite and the Grand Canyon area may have snow and that may affect your driving in those areas.

IF you make a list of all the things you'd like to see/do in each place you'll have a better idea of how long to spend in each city or national park. Then you can decide if you'll have the time and energy to also go to NYC.

I am originally from NYC. IF you have not been there before this trip, it can easily be a place where you'll want to spend a full week!

Remember it will be winter here in Feb which means heavy chances of rain in Ca and snow in the Grand Canyon area.

The East coast parts you are going to will have a high that will be equal to the avg lows in Ca. You will waste one day going east and a half day getting back to Ca if you are retuning home from here so that leaves 5 days to see NYC and Boston. Not sure I would suggest both cities in that short a time

Pick one or just make this a west coast trip this time around

You do know this is a lot of lot of driving right? An itinerary that looks like this on paper.

SF 4 nights

Yosemite 1 night

Monterey 1 night

Santa Barbara 1 night

Los Angeles 4 nights

Las Vegas 2 nights

GCNP 1 night

Looks like this on a map.

http://goo.gl/maps/XAm3N

It is 1,600 miles (2,600km) of driving minimum and 30 hours of driving minimum without adding in breaks for eating, seeing sights as you go, etc.

You really don't have time to see San Diego or Anaheim (Disneyland) if you are bringing kids. Which brings up the question, who is coming and what approximate ages?

I do think it is a good idea to reconsider the NY-Boston portion as well. You lose two whole days in transit. If you spent the whole three weeks (20 nights?) on the west coast you'd have more time to see others areas like the Napa Valley, San Diego, spend more time in some of the small towns on the trip down from SF to LA.

With 3 weeks you also can add great places like Death Valley NP and Joshua Tree NP. Winter is a good time for them.

Suggest staying on one coast; save other for future trip.

Travel less; enjoy more.

First shot:

-SF 4 days

-drive to LA; 3 days

-LA & Annaheim 5 days.

-SD 4 days

- LV 5 days

If weather permits, factor in Grand Canyon and/or Yosemite by deducting days above from SF, LA, SD, and LV.
