Please do post this in the road trip forum....

Your short day in California is something that all of will probably say is just not worth it.

a couple of hours in LA and a couple hours of San Francisco and most of your time on a long boring road...

sounds like work and not vacation to me.

and then a lot of time on the road and a short time in Yosemite

again sounds like not much fun to me to see such an amazing state as California is.

I would just save the gas price of driving both wqys and fly to your convention in San Francisco and then rent a car one way back home.....or just fly back home.

Perhaps the road trip forum will be more friendly towards your trip -

have you driven this far before both ways? and if so, tell us how you liked that trip.

Second the recommendation to post in the road trip forum, since this is a multi-state trip. You might want to re-post some of the CA-only section in the relevant CA forums (e.g. the Yosemite visit).

But I will say this: Day 8 is basically impossible. Departing LV at 8am, arriving noon-ish, 6 hour drive to SF = you will not have time to see any of LA beyond what's over the freeway soundwall. That's a waste of your time and gas. I would re-jigger your route to avoid the LA metro area and head straight to the bay area. This is already a very long driving day - no point extending it.

If you're planning to camp in Yosemite, head to that forum NOW and read up on it. This is for May 2013? In-park campgrounds are probably full already. (There are always cancelations, and there are alternates outside the park, but still, you'll need to sort out that part quickly.)

Consider cutting your trip in half and just flying to a destination in California and then driving around a little from there if you want to. This does not sound like much of a vacation to me, you will spend all of your time in the car.

Southwest Airline or Jet Blue Airlines have inexpensive flights which should be no more than about $800 for both of you roundtrip.

Most places you want to visit will not allow you to sleep in your car on the side of the road or something like that if thats what you are thinking of doing.

Yeah, definitely put this on the Road Trip forum, but before you do, take a serious look at your plan to determine if any of it actually makes sense. I don't think I would do this trip on a bet, or even if someone paid me.

Hi Chris P and welcome to TripAdvisor. I see you are brand new today :-)

I agree with the other posters that you should post your questions on the Road Trips forum. To find it, click on this blue link and it's about halfway down the page:

You said:

Please know that you CANNOT just sleep in your car or a tent in a National Park unless you are in a recognized campground!

You must reserve your Yosemite campsite months ahead of time and they are taken within minutes of becoming available.

I am an RVer and I find that KOA campgrounds are quite expensive nowadays but they do have kamping kabins which might work well for you.

If you will look at the general California forum page as well as the City pages you are thinking of visiting and looking at some of the sample itineraries it may be helpful to you in planning a trip of this sort , and, you may be able to put together a less packed itinerary that may be more enjoyable for you.

The Utah forum has lots of info about visiting that part of the Country and doing a loop of sorts as well.

Perhaps someone here on this thread can post some suggestions for you about a more manageable trip that may take into account some of the places you want to visit.
