Clear Lake, CA in August for a week

Going to spend a week near SE part of the lake and wondering what's to do there? Will be with kids ages 11 and 14.

I've heard that it's very hot during that time of year and that the lake stinks of rotting algae. If nothing in area how far to Mendocino coast and which route? What other possible day trips in surrounding area if it's unpleasant in Clear Lake due to heat and odor?

I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised when I get there.

Thanks in advance.

My daughter just stayed in Clearlake last weekend. She is accustomed to pristine lakes like Tahoe. She said Clear lake was stinky and gross. Can't imagine staying there for a week.

Maybe head to the coast. Your kids may like Glass Beach near Fort Bragg (2.25 hours from Clearlake)
