If you're driving Hwy 1 between Los Angeles (L.A.) and San Francisco (SF), and you only have one night, then choose Cambria. If you have more time, stop again in Monterey.

There are oodles of ideas in the Top Questions on the right side of this page (full TA website.)

Agree with PNWF.

However, I would encourage you to add that other night in Monterey/Carmel/Pacific Grove area if possible. It is a very scenic section of the coast with much to stop and see.

Hearst Castle near Cambria can easily fill a day and so can the drive through Big Sur, although they could be combined into one day if needed. Monterey/Carmel can fill another day.

We recently did the drive up the coast LA to SF. We stayed 3 nights along the way and really could have spent longer. Lots to see and do and such beautiful scenery. We stayed at Santa Barbara, Cambria and Carmel.

Listen your Melbournean compatriot...... three nights along the coast, Santa Barbara, Cambria and Carmel, is just about perfect.

We did this trip in January, so it was too cold really to swim. If we were doing it in the warmer months we would definitely take longer and have some 'beach play' time along the way. One of the highlights for us was seeing the huge elephant seal colony on the beach - it was a spectacular sight. I think it was at Piedras Blancas in southern Big Sur, near San Simeon. Don't miss it!
