Hertz vs Avis

I'm looking at booking a SUV for a week - LA to Vegas (via San Francisco).

I'm leaning towards Avis which is a little cheaper.

Can anyone provide any advice/feedback of any pro's / con's of these two companies, any hidden costs or penalties that I'm not taking into consideration which precludes one over the other...

Much appreciated

They both are in the major league of rental cars. Toss a coin, or just take cheapest option.

The hidden costs with car rentals are typically a) insurance, so make sure whatever prices you are being shown include the insurance that you'll need as a foreign driver here in the US - if you show up to pick u the car and don't have insurance, you'll have to buy it at the counter which is not a good deal b) under-25 fee - if you're under 25 years old, they'll charge you an extra daily fee, but Hertz sometimes has online coupons to waive this fee, c) one way drop-off fee if you're picking the car up in one city and dropping it off in another, but usually the car companies are straight forward about this fee - still, make sure they're stating it to you so that you don't get surprised later on.

That said, coming from Australia, you may find it to be a better deal to book via www.traveljigsaw.com.au or www.carhire3000.co.uk - usually they include the insurance in the quote and they don't charge the one-way drop off fee.

There also won't be drop off charges if you rent with one of the brokers and rentals in Califonia have not fees for a second driver by law. Just to say one week for the drive between Los Angeles to Las Vegas via San Francisco will be tight.
