Santa Cruz - San Simeon/Cambria

We are leaving Napa Valley on Thurs. Sept 12 and travelling to Santa Cruz and south to San Simeon/Cambria. We have until Mon. Sept 16th. when we will return to San Francisco. How can we best spend our time in this area? We like to hike, kayak as well as see historical sites. We want to stop in Monterey for the Cannery Tour & travel along the Big Sur. Where is the best place to stay to see as much as possible? We also want to visit Hearst Castle. Would it be a good idea to stay at the Treebones resort in a yurt?

You'll need to break up this plan with 2 locations to overnight in. You can easily fit Santa Cruz in on the drive down to Monterey, which is a good place to base yourself to visit Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay aquarium, Carmel by The Sea, Carmel Beach and Point Lobos State Reserve. Spend the 12th and 13th nights there.

Then drive down through Big Sur to Cambria, taking in Bixby Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach, Nepenthe for lunch, McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Salmon Creek Trail, Ragged Point, the elephant seal rookery.

Spend the 14th and 15th nights in Cambria. Visit Hearst Castle on the 15th, along with Cambria shops or visit the Paso Robles wine country.

You can return to SF on the 16th via Highway 46 toward Paso Robles and connecting with Highway 101 north.

Here is information on Santa Cruz.

If you like to kayak you should do that at Elkhorn Slough, which is in Moss Landing on the way to Monterey from Santa Cruz. This is a protected area and the sea life sightings are fantastic. Monterey and Santa Cruz are only 45 minutes apart.

Thank you so much for the specifics on "how to do it all". This has really helped out.
