Tahoe or Vegas before Yosemite 3rd wk of October

We have reservations at the Ahwahnee on Sunday October 20. We will tour around Yosemite before overnighting in Napa on Tuesday Oct. 22. We fly home from San Francisco later that week. Knowing how iffy the weather can be at this time of the year, which option should we do? Option (1) fly into Reno on Saturday October 19 and drive to Lake Tahoe, overnight in Lake Tahoe and then drive to Mono Lake and Juno Lake before arriving in Yosemite. Option (2) fly to Las Vegas, catch a show on the Saturday and make the 9 hour drive through Death Valley to Yosemite or Option (3) fly into San Francisco and drive to Yosemite immediately and stay outside the park the first night. We are a couple travelling with our 16 year old son. We love gorgeous scenery, photography, nature, hiking, horse back riding. We are not into casinos or gambling. A drive around Lake Tahoe might be pretty, but I do not see why I would pay to stay at the Marriiott on South Lake Tahoe which has no view of the lake and the gondola will be closed. While I wiould like a kayak or small boat tour around Emerald Bay, we are not the type to enjoy the Miss Dixie. Any suggestions are most appreciated by the east coast traveller who does not get to see the west coast often enough.

Iffy meaning with Tioga Road? www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tiogaopen.htm

I like option #1 the best. You will most likely get to see the fall colors, though I guess you have that back eat too. http://www.monocounty.org/fall-colors/

Have you looked into staying in North Lake Tahoe? Sounds like more your pace and style.

If you want to rent a boat on Lake Tahoe, there are several locations to do so for example,

If you go to Tahoe I would stay in North Tahoe and not south lake Tahoe given your interests.

I would not go to las Vegas to see a show - that is just crazy since you do not like casinos....and you have many good show opportunities in Ontario already.

I would probably fly into Reno and drive to San Francisco - that way you can avoid driving through the boring drive to Yosemite twice (i.e. on the way there and back). In Reno, you are 30 minutes away from the mountains. Tioga Pass will most likely be open (there is always a chance of a snow flurry closing the pass temporarily starting as soon as early October....but often October is nice weather.).

Carefree has two posts the same on this topic. One is also on the Yosemite, CA forum.

Many of us read everything under the CA Forum so will see both.

I say skip Vegas, go to north Lake Tahoe.
