4 nights divided by 2 nights in two places is a good plan and Monterey/Pismo/Avila are good family friendly choices.

Monterey lodging:

Best Western Beach Resort Monterey (Only hotel in Monterey directly on the beach. Rooms are okay size, but there's lots of great outdoor space, a restaurant on site, a bar area with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Monterey Bay and a pool)

Monterey Bay Inn

Best Western Victorian Inn

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

For the Pismo/Avila leg of your trip, I recommend either the Pismo Lighthouse Suites or Avila Lighthouse Suites. The rooms at the Pismo location are HUGE and have 2 bathrooms. It may exceed your budget a bit, but well worth it for the size of room you get.

Other options:

Sandcastle Inn right on the beach

Cottage Inn

Best Western Shelter Cove Lodge

Kon Tiki Inn

Other things to see/do in the Pismo/Avila area:

Avila Valley Barn (A roadside fruit/vegetable stand that also sells fresh baked goods, ice cream, gift ware and has a pen with small farm animals the kids can feed)

Avila Hot Springs pool

Dinosaur Caves Park

Take a Hummer ride out in the Oceano dunes

Hang out on the beach, rent boogie boards

Montana de Oro State Park bluff trail hike/tide pools.

Since you have a family and want to get out of the "hustle and bustle" you might look into Andril Fireplace cottages in Pacific Grove. This is just next door to both Monterey and Carmel but may give you more room and a fridge etc. for the kid's snacks. I believe they also have kitchens.
