Route plan from Monterey / Big Sur/Yosemite area

Hi all

Will be driving from San Fran the morning of 9th September to our next destination Monterey where we will stay for 2 nights before driving to Yosemite ….. we’re staying at the Evergreen Lodge in Groveland.

We really want to drive to Big Sur too so my hubby was proposing to do this on our way to Yosemite from Monterey on Highway 1 down to Cambria, then cutting across on 46 & 41 to Fresno, from where we can get to Groveland using the 41 & 49.

My question is, does this sound like an OK option??

I know it’s going to be out of our way but we want to visit Big Sur definitely

Any other routes or suggestions welcomed of course

Thanks

Anne

The Evergreen Lodge is about an hour from Yosemite Valley.

I can't see how you could do all that (Monterey - Hwy 1 - Cambria - Hwy 41 - Hwy 49 - Hwy 120) in one day. Any Hwy 49 is a winding road in the foothills that just goes on & on. And you wouldn't have any time in Yosemite this day.

A more logical route might be to spend your second coastal night in Cambria rather than both nights in Monterey. Or spend your full day in Monterey with a drive down Hwy 1 and then back to Monterey.

Try to actually get to Yosemite NP before exiting the Park's Big Oak Flat Entrance and driving to the Evergreen Lodge for your night's sleep.

Thank you PNWF.

How about SF straight to Big Sur then back to Monterey on day 1 ?

This then gives us the next day as a full day in Monterey ... we want to go to Leguna Seca race track and Aquarium in the area on the 10th.

Then on the 11th set off from Monterey to YNP before checking to Evergreen?

What do you think?

what do you mean straight to big sur ? From SF ? Well you cannot do that via hwy 1 to Cambria and back in one day unless you just rush rush rush

as you may have read Big Sur is the coastal area from Cambria to Carmel so if you want to drive down 101 and then cut across to Cambria and stay there and drive North on 1 with an early start you can make it in the afternoon - you then have to decide what time based on the race.

Yes, I meant drive from SF to Cambria area but thought it may be ambitious.

We've already booked 2 nights in our Monterey hotel so may have to stay more local to there rather than further on down the coast

You can do SF to as far as McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and return to Monterey for your 2 overnights there. It really isn't necessary to drive all the way down to Cambria (That's a 6 hour drive from SF! Another 3 hours Cambria back up to Monterey).

Just be sure to leave SF early.

Here's a possible day plan for you:

Leave SF by 7:00 am and drive straight to Point Lobos just south of Carmel (Arrive approx. 10:00 am), spend a few hours walking the scenic trails, continue south around noonish. 5-10 minute stop at Bixby Bridge for photo op. Continue south the Nepenthe for lunch (1 1/2 hours. You might want to briefly browse at the Phoenix Shop off Nepenthe's parking lot). Continue south 8 miles to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to see McWay Falls. You would likely arrive JPBSP between 3:00 and 4:00 pm. Spend about half an hour to an hour, then drive the 1 1/2 hours back to Monterey, check into your hotel, dinner out, relaxing evening in your room.
