West Coast Road Trip

Hi, thinking about taking a two week road trip with my 16yr old daughter in early July. Starting in San Francisco and taking in Big Sur, LA, La Vegas and Yosemite.

Anyone got any suggestions about stuff to do on-route? My daughter especially like beaches and shopping whereas I like exploring the great outdoors. Oh, and she really wants to swim with dolphins!

Thanks so much!

Look on the right side of your screen - there are FAQs there, and will get you started in planning your itinerary. Where to stop, the route to take, what to see along the coast.

I suggest dropping Las Vegas, you don't really have the time, and it's no fun for teenagers - they can't go into casinos.

Some thoughts - Yosemite is good. I'd also explore the eastern SIerra, the area outside Yosemite's eastern entrance, possibly on the way to/from Las Vegas. There is a ghost town, places to go horseback riding, and the Mammoth area. At that age (and at all ages) my girls liked Las Vegas. The LV Strip is a bizarre spectacle and they liked to see the shows in the evening. I think that your daughter would like Sea World in San Diego.

My daughter and I have both independently swum with dolphins. Not as thrilling as you'd think. They aren't like dogs. They are busy fishing and they pretty much ignore you. At Sea World you can see the dolphins in their enclosure.

Did you make that trip in 2013? If so, where did you go?

This is too much for 2 weeks -- even dropping Vegas will be a stretch.

LOL!! I did forget about the previous post!

No we didn't make it to LA, went to Dubai instead, which was fantastic but looking forward to visiting LA this year though!

We did a trip to SF two years ago with my 15 yr old. SF sea fog made beaches a no go but Pier 39, SoSF bike tour from Hayes Valley doing "the Wiggle" was a hit with all. I'd head for SoCal as quickly as possible, Monterey Aquarium is outstanding, Santa Barbara beaches are lovely and Harry's Bar on the beach a cool place to go for dinner or lunch, amazing sunsets right on the beach. Santa Monica had good shopping near pier, 3rd street I think and biking along to Venice beach is cool. My daughter like yours loves to shop etc but she loved these activities much to our surprise. Hearst Castle at San Simeon was worth a look and the seal colony fun to watch. Vegas shows are excellent but as she won't be able to even stand near the slot machines the casinos are a no go, as long as you don't mind this then that would probably suit you both, the helicopter flight to the Grand Canyon was amazing. To do Yosemite and all the rest would push your time on the coast I think, we are redoing California this year for three weeks to include Yosemite but I am finding planning that a challenge with driving times/stop overs!

As noted in the other comments, Las Vegas is somewhat remote from the other cities, a 5 hour drive from LA. In a two week trip this might make it tough to add. It would be more worthwhile to go there if you were to do something like the Grand Canyon via a helicopter ride. Even though they were too young to drink or gamble, my girls have always liked Las Vegas, but for them it was a several day trip walking through the stores in the casinos, laying out by the pool, playing in coin arcades, listening to minstrels in the Venetian, and seeing shows in the evening. If you were already inclined to go there, your daughter would find things to do, but it might be tedious for you if it is just the two of you.

Are you flying in and out of one airport or two airports?

I would skip Las Vegas. Even though it is a popular spot with Brits when doing a "west coast" trip, it is no where near the coast and doesn't really fit with the other destinations. Look at the map below.

You can see how far removed Las Vegas is from the rest of the cities you'd like to see.

As to "swimming with dolphins", the only two places in CA I know of you can do that are Six Flags in the Bay Area and SeaWorld in San Diego.

Swimming with dolphins is not without controversy. It isn't discussed much on the CA boards because there is so little of it, but you might peruse the Hawaii Forums where discussions of the topic get hot and run for pages and pages.
