15 day revised Itinerary: 6 stops

Hi, after some suggestions on our initial itinerary (which included additional stops in monterrey and carmel), here is our revised two week trip. Does this look more manageable? We understand we will be driving often but other than Yosemite to Big Sur and Big Sur to SB all the driving is under 4 hours. All recs please welcome! As you can see, we are trying to mix up cities and nature and not be at a fast pace the whole time. In SB we plan to basically have two spa/pool days after our hiking and before ending in L.A.

Fri, 08/01: fly to SF evening from FL. Settle in.

08/02: SF

08/03: SF

08/04: am to Napa (hour drive)

08/05: Napa

08/06: 1/2 day Napa, then drive afternoon to Yosemite (4 hours)

08/07: Yosemite

08/08: Yosemite

08/09: early am to Big Sur (5 hrs)

08/10: Big Sur

08/11: Big Sur

08/12: am drive to Santa Barbara (4 hrs)

08/13: SB

08/14: SB. Evening to LA (2 hours).

08/15: LA

08/16: LA

08/17: LA (fly back to FL at night)

- While in LA, maybe day trips to Malibu, Long Beach, etc. if feel it's worth it. All suggestions

welcome!

"....08/12: am drive to Santa Barbara (4 hrs)"....

4 hours ONLY if you don't make any scenic stops along the way.

Yosemite to Big Sur is about a 5 hour drive, but do you plan on visiting Monterey, Carmel or Point Lobos State Reserve en route? Plan on that drive being MUCH longer with the above stops.

Where in Big Sur do you plan to stay? Some lodgings are NOT in Big Sur's "village" area, but, rather further down the coast, which will add to your drive time from Yosemite.

Big Sur to SB sights:

McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park: 30 minute stop

Ragged Point: 15-20 minute stop (Good place to soak in the last of Big Sur's elevated views and/or take a restroom break)

Elephant seal rookery near the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse: 15-20 minute stop

Hearst Castle: 1 1/2 hour stop

Cambria: Cute seaside town nestled in a pine forest with lots of great little shops, places to eat, etc.

Morro Bay/Rock

Pismo Beach

Solvang

That 4 hour drive will more likely be MUCH longer than you expect.

I think a night between Big Sur and Santa Barbara would allow you to enjoy a more leisurely paced drive down the slow and scenic coast, 1 night Cambria, 2 nights Santa Barbara would work well for this type of trip. Considering that you likely wouldn't roll into Santa Barbara until late in the day anyway, you'll lose all of Night1 in Santa Barbara on the drive down. You can leave Cambria early the following morning and roll into SB by noonish even with a few briefs stops en route. Just something to think about. Especially since you're not leaving Santa Barbara until evening on the third night toward LA.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! We are counting for a "full day" doing the drive from Yosemite to Big Sur, taking time for all the stops along the way. Stopping in Big Sur for two days (haven't looked into exact sights there yet but planning on driving around to include sights) and then on day 3 moving along to Santa Barbara. Again, giving the whole day just for the drive. We will end at night in Santa Barbara and then have about a day and a half in SB to recharge (planning on pool and spa) before heading into LA for our last leg. Does this sound a little better, nicer-paced now that i've fully explained or do you still think we should stop one place else in between Big Sur and Santa Barbara?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As long as you're aware of what to expect, then go with what you've planned. The good thing is you've allowed more than one night in your key stops. That at least gives you a full day for exploring the sights in/around those areas.

Enjoy your visit.

>>08/04: am to Napa (hour drive)<<

Plan on a 90+ minute drive, especially if you are staying in the Napa Valley rather than the town of Napa. (You might also consider a stop at Muir Woods en route to see the Coastal Redwoods.)

>>08/06: 1/2 day Napa, then drive afternoon to Yosemite (4 hours)<<

Since you have effectively two previous days in Napa, I'd get on the road early and go straight to Yosemite. You'll make enough photo stops once you're in the valley that the drive will be longer than 4 hours.
