REdwoods

Hi,

I would love to get some advice from everyone please...

We are going to do an RV trip in July and really want to see the Redwoods and do some hiking around the area.

Where is best to do this with an RV and where would you suggest to stay. We will be staying in Mendocino before, and are then headed to Crater Lake after the Redwoods. We have 2 nights...

Thanks in advance,

Kate

There are redwoods in Mendocino, Montgomery Woods just a few miles east of the town of Mendocino has some of the tallest trees and very uncrowded. Also along Hwy 128 between Mendocino Coast and the Anderson Valley, Hendy Woods or right along the road can't remember the park name but lots of camping sites.

Are these two nights between Mendocino and Crater Lake? If so you are in luck! Almost half way between in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, which is about 4 hours from both Mendo and Crater Lake. One of the most amazing hikes I have ever taken was though Fern Canyon, which is part of the park. There are also some pretty amazing redwoods. Check out the photos.

You will be in a RV so driving out to Fern Canyon may not be possible and the road to Montgomery Redwoods is pretty narrow and not a good idea in a RV. But, there are plenty of great redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants and in Redwood National and State Parks. Go to the Redwood National Park forum and read the threads and top questions there. You will find lots of good tips.

NO, driving a motorhome out to Fern Canyon is NOT possible!

Please do not try it!

There are several campgrounds and RV parks in the redwoods, and you can drive to many areas to walk or hike. If you plan to stay in a state park (within the NP area) , they do not have hookups and you will need to book well ahead.

There are also several privately owned RV parks that will have hookups. You might be interested in this one; you're sure to see elk:

How are you getting to the Eureka area? If you intend to stay on Hwy 1, be aware that the road from Rockport into Leggett is very winding and slow. Allow enough time as you will be going slowly!
