"Traveller in need of assistance "

Hi my husband & I are flying into Las Vegas in June, been there before so staying 3 nights then heading to Bishop in hire car. My husband wants to spend his birthday in Monterey so have booked this for 3 nights. My question is do we then visit San Francisco, must admit am concerned about driving into centre to hotels in Union Square, or do we continue down the coast ? Would love to see Los Angeles but again driving into centre ? Would we be better staying at the beach ? Can you get transport in ? We then want to do a round trip back to Vegas, already booked last 2 nights so sorted out there, which way do you suggest ? Have been told to visit Joshua Tree but then some say San Deigo then Pheonix ? Any help would be appreciated, have driven around America before so the driving doesn't bother us it's just the bigger cities. Any help would be most valuable.

Hi

Can you share more about your timing?

Las Vegas - 3 nights

Bishop - 1 night

Then Monterey from Bishop? Where does the birthday fall in this plan?

How many nights total?

You may want to ask in the San Francisco forum - generally one does not want a rental car in San Francisco, since parking there is very expensive, the city is compact and public transportation is excellent there.

So you may want to return car on the outskirts of SF and then take public transit into the city.

LA is more of a car city but you can get by without a car here too. You could drive from Monterey down through Big Sur and on to Santa Barbara, from where you could return your car and then take Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner train into downtown Los Angeles if you are nervous about driving into LA.

Lots to decipher here.....

Your itinerary is pretty jumbled and confusing. What stands out to me is that you state that you have been to Vegas before but are unsure about SF. Based on what you wrote, you have 5 nights planned in Vegas. If you have not been to SF then I would take 3 nights away from Vegas and use that time in SF.

How long is this trip in total??

Sorry not done this before. Arrive in Vegas 12 June leave Vegas 6 July. We are only staying in Vegas to see a show before travelling around. Last time we went to Vegas we flew out to Florida so didn't venture away from Vegas this time we are hoping to see as much as possible.

Don't be sorry. You should be glad that you decided to get some advice prior to this large trip.....

One more question....are you against taking short domestic flights?? An example would be LA to Las Vegas or Las Vegas to SF.

Would prefer to drive , hiring a car in Las Vegas due to luggage allowances these days, we were almost caught out last year with internal flights in Australia with luggage. We have booked Bishop for 2 nights then Monterey for 3 nights allowing my husband to go Whale watching on his birthday. We leave Monterey on 21 June, our instinct is to go down the coast towards LA forgetting San Francisco, but wonder if we should visit as we are so close ??

Why 2 nights in Bishop?

You're driving directly from Bishop through the Yosemite high country down to the flat Central Valley over the coast range and to Monterey in one day?

Three nights in Monterey.

Then how many nights until you fly out of Las Vegas?

We were advised need 2 nights in Bishop ? Is this not the case ? After Monterey we then have 14 nights before returning to Las Vegas, here we have a show booked before our flight back to UK .

What do you mean "we were advised 2 nights in Bishop"? There is really no need whatsoever to spend anytime there at all unless you are planning to visit for a specific reason or are going to Mammoth Mtn.

Digest this itinerary for starts:

June 12 - Arrive LAS. Overnight in LV

June 13 - LV

June 14 - LV to LA via Joshua Tree NP

June 15 - LA

June 16 - LA

June 17 - LA.; early afternoon to Santa Barbara. Overnight in SB

June 17 - SB to Cambria. Overninght in Cambria

June 18 - Hwy 1 drive towards Monterey. See the many previous posts about this drive and what to see. Overnight in Monterey.

June 19 - Whale Watch for Hubby's birthday. Is this his birthday by the way? Santa Cruz for overnight

June 20 - Santa Cruz with afternoon drive to SF. Overnight in SF. Plan on hotel/motel with free or inexpensive parking. See the many previous posts on this topic.

June 21 - San Francisco. Overnight in SF

June 22 - SF; Overninght on SF

June 23 - SF - Overnight in SF

June 24 - Napa Valley / Sonoma for wineries & wine tasting if you like that. Overnight there.

June 25 - Napa to Yosemite Nat'l Park. Overnight in Yosemite.

June 26 - Yosemite; Overnight in Yosemite

June 27 - Yosemite to ?? (depends on your interests)

June 28 - ?? to Las Vegas.

June 29 - July 6.... lots of options here and within the above itinerary. Things that you may want to add include:

Orange County, San Diego, Grand Canyon, Mojave Preserve, Sequoia Park, more stops along Hwy 1, and more. At least this is a start...
