You don't have much time with just 6 nights. Have you had a chance to read the relevant Top Questions on the right? Is your travel style to peek at a destination and to move on, or do you prefer to stop and enjoy the destination?
Either way, I think you could barely do one of these options
C: Las Vegas - L.A. - Cambria - San Francisco
I assume you're open to flying out of any of the cities on May 16th.
Also I wanted to ask one more thing.... what is better San Diego Zoo or Yosemite. If we have to pick one of those because of time constraint.
Yosemite..... But better for what? Do you have little kids? They may be happier with the zoo.
I think the question is moot though as your time constraint makes both a rushed proposition.
Are you planning sightseeing in both SF and LA?
What do you intend to see?
There are many zoo's but just one Yosemite NP....
So i guess i might have to skip the zoo. I do have a toddler and 7 yr old along with us. We are planning on doing must-see sight seeing spots in LA and SF. Also is there a suggested route for LA-Monterey-Yosemite-SF
or should we just go to SF from LA through Pacific Coastal Highway and do a day tip from SF to Yosemite.
Or Stay at Monterey overnight and leave for Yosemite in the morning and leave next day for SF
Yes. This is the route: LA-Monterey-Yosemite-SF But you need another stop between L.A. and Monterey if you're planning to use Hwy 1 on the coast.
Do not take a day trip to Yosemite from San Francisco with kids ~ 4 hrs in the car each way is just too much.
Sat May 10 ~ arrive L.A. around noon
Sun May 11 ~ L.A.
Mon May 12 ~ Pismo Beach
Tues May 13 ~ all day drive, tourism, coastal fun, end in Monterey
Wed May 14 ~ 4 hr drive to Yosemite Valley, afternoon in Yosemite Valley
Thurs May 15 ~ 4 hr drive to SF, drop car. SF tourism.
Fri May 16 ~ tourism in SF, taxi to SFO, flight out of SFO at 11:35 pm
This is a lot of driving with kids. Is this a trip that is for them or more for you?
this trip is more for us than them.... we frequently do 4 hr trips to va as my in laws stay there for the weekend... so it should be okay with them.... but i know what you are trying to say.
also i didnt know about pismo beach. is it necessary? or is it really breathtaking that we should be doing
The problem is trying to drive from L.A. to Monterey in one day. It's feasible via Hwy 101, slightly inland. It's too much via Hwy 1, on the coast.

The idea of a "must do" or "must see" doesn't appeal to me. I think visitors need to know something about their own travel style and to do some research. Then the visitors select destinations or scenic drives / routes that match their travel style.
Las Vegas is known everywhere. The section of Hwy 1 between Cambria and Monterey includes Big Sur and is famous. Yosemite NP (especially Yosemite Valley) is famous. San Francisco includes unique cable cars & Alcatraz.
But no one is required to visit any of these. Some folks live 2 or 3 hours from Yosemite and have never been. Some San Francisco residents have never gone to Alcatraz. It's all about travel style & interests.
