Is it worth taking extra time to pass through Yosemite?

We will be travelling from San Francisco to Las Vegas by car in mid August and are wondering if it is worth adding extra time on and passing through Yosemite National Park? Or if we should take the quicker route heading down through Fresno/Bakersfield/etc to Vegas. We'll have one night to stay overnight somewhere along the way. We are coming to San Francisco from Los Angeles along the coast. Sorry for the vagueness here, it's my first question that I have asked. Also sorry if it has been asked elsewhere. Thanks.

In a word, yes. If you finally go up hwy 395, through Tioga Pass, into Yosemite, even if only for a day,

You could stay in Lee Vining, get up early and drive into Yosemite.

This way is So VERY much more scenic than through Bakersfield and Fresno.

Other areas to stay if you want to drive a bit further is Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, or Lone Pine (best of the small towns in that area.) Mammoth Lakes is prettier than Lee Vining and quieter as Lee Vining is on a major highway (highway 395).

(NOrthernCalifGall.......OP is going from SF to Las Vegas, not the other way.)

From San Francisco......

Yes, it is worth any extra time to go through Yosemite. The Fresno/Bakersfield rout has nothing to recommend it, unless all you want is to get from A to B.

How long are you planning to stay in Las Vegas? One night from SF to Vegas is a NO WAY., whichever route you do it.

Use the Two Day idea that includes Yosemite NP. Read the hyperlinked article about the drive between Las Vegas & Yosemite Valley.

August is hot & dry in the Central Valley (Bakersfield.) It's not fun.
