From LA to Oregon: 395 versus i-5

In a couple of weeks, we will be driving back from San Bernardino area back home to Portland. We've done I-5 mulitple times and now considering Highway 395. Wife and I are looking at covering the distance in two days (Google claims 16.5 hours).

We do need to get back in two days, but would this be a nice diversion instead of the Interstate?

Thanks!

Two driving days meaning stopping only 1 night?

I personally wouldn't take 395 unless I had time to stop along the way, you are going to add a lot of drive time but not be able to take the time to stop and see anything.

I never use Google since I think their timing is inaccurate!

www.mapquest.com says Hwy 395 to Hwy 97 to Hwy 58 to I-5 at Eugene then to Portland is just over 1,000 miles and will take just under 18 hours.

That means an average of right about 55 MPH which I don't think you can do based on the different sections of 395 I've driven. With a two lane road, which much of it is, you'll get stuck behind slow cars, RVs and trucks.

This route would not be my choice with only one overnight stop.

Heck, I like to drive -- as others on this forum know -- but only one overnight is not a good idea, even if you take 395 north only as far as Susanville, CA and then cut over somehow to Interstate 5. Highway 395 north of Susanville -- well, you can keep it -- very boring to my way of thinking, uninteresting and a waste of my time. But you might want to do it one time, in which case, plan for TWO overnights along the way.

We just love 395 and most of it is 4 lanes (but it narrows through the towns on the way) till Bridgeport but I agree with the others. Only 2 days won't give you much time to enjoy.

Based on comments, I may reconsider and add a day with two overnights.

...and if we do plan three days, what are the suggested night stops (as in is it better spend more time on which leg of the trip).

This will be more like a 20 hours trip so maybe:

1. San Bernadino to Mammoth Lakes

2. Mammoth lake to Susanville (or maybe mt Shasta)

3. Ti Portland.

If you stay Susanville it's app an 8-9 hours drive to Portland.

To Mammoth Lakes app 6 hours and 5-6 hours to Susanville.

Or maybe stay in Reno or Carson City rather than Mammoth

I would take 395 and push on from Susanville to Klamath Falls for the night.

Then drive up the east side of the Cascades through Bend into Portland.
