2 d. from Oakland via 108 to Mono via to YNP or another way?

We (an active couple in our 60s) will be leaving Oakland mid-morning on a Saturday in mid-July. We want to be close to Yosemite to go in on a Monday (yes, we have reservations). We have thought about taking 108 to Mono Lake for a stay Sat.- Sun. and then coming in the east side of the NP on Mon. We would like to know if this is a good idea or if we should we plan these two days some other way. Thanks so much for any advice!

P.S. We've been to Tahoe twwice already so no interest to to that way.

It's certainly a good option. The Eastern Sierra is definitely worth one or two nights. Mono Lake is interesting and Mammoth Lakes and Devil's Postpile NP is worth a visit.

A list of sights in the area can be found at tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28926-c182361/Califo…

The other area that is definitely worth a visit closer to Tioga Pass than Mammoth Lakes is June Lake Loop - four lakes Grant, Silver, Gull, and June Lake.

In terms of where to stay some stay in Lee Vining if they want early morning photos of Mono Lake or have hiking plans on Tioga Pass or Toulumne Meadows. However for a more relaxing time both June Lake and Mammoth has better lodging options off the busy highway 395.

As I said in your other thread. Hwy 108 is a great choice. Very scenic and fun to drive if you like narrow mountain roads. Some people do not. Also some people have issues going from 6000 feet to 9000 feet in only 9 miles. One's body doesn't have much time to acclimate. This can cause problems for people on blood pressure medicine or other medications. Tioga Pass from the east also has a similar elevation change.

If you do take 108, you will drive through Bridgeport. This is one of the most scenic towns in the state and has a lovely old courthouse. There's a motel south of town where John Wayne used to stay when he was filming in the area (think True Grit and North to Alaska). This motel is at the junction of the road to Bodie which you could visit the next morning. The motel is funky but timeless.

The next day after visiting Bodie which will take most of the morning, you would then head down to Lee Vining where you could spend the afternoon at Mono Lake. Lee Vining has some basic motels or you could drive further south to June Lake or even further to Mammoth Lakes which has nice restaurants and night life.

Mmmm. Thank you for all the details you supplied. They definitely present some questions to ponder. I'm sensing that perhaps we might consider the other apparent alternative of of visiting the "Gold Rush" towns along Rte. 49 instead.

If you do the Gold Country, take a look at Murphy's. This neat little town is convenient to Columbia State Park, is near some spectacular caves, and has a full blown wine industry surrounding it.
