Well, the common ones

Flying, quick and easy, and usually fairly cheap.

You have choices of multiple airports in the LA Area, depending on what part you are staying at.

Of course, there is LAX, but also Long Beach (LGB), Bob Hope (Burbank/BUR) and John Wayne (Orange County/Santa ANA/SNA). Popular discounted airlines include jetBlue, Southwest and Virgin America. Spirit usually comes out the cheapest, but they charge a lot of extra fees, so great for a day/overnight trip with only a small carry-on that fits under your seat, but can become more expensive when you add all the extra fees.

There are the express buses like MegaBus and BoltBus, these are deluxe buses that pretty much ar non-stop between LA and Las Vegas, fares are based on supply and demand, so you could find fares for just a couple of bucks if you are lucky and flexible, but the full fare can be close to airfare.

There is no train service to Las Vegas.

And of course, renting a vehicle, the main way is the I-10 to the I-15 freeway. While there a re few things and places to se along the way, it is pretty much driving through the desert, so not that exciting. Traffic can be hit or miss, on weekends, especially holidays ones, you have Californians driving to Las Vegas, and those in the Las Vegas area coming to California, so the first and last days tend to be heavy (Friday and Sunday or Monday). Also the road is only 2 lanes in each direction for major segments, and it is popular with truck drivers, so an accident can cause major issues.

So it depends on what is right for you, say 3 to 4 hours to fly (with all the checking in, security, etc. The Bus is at least 5 hours, depending on traffic. as would be the rental car drive.

Main options are a) rent a car and drive - about 6 hours b) flying - flight time is under an hour, plus time to get to/from the airport, go through security, etc., c) bus service - try www.megabus.com or www.luxbusamerica.com, these take longer than driving yourself. There is no train service between LA and Las Vegas.

The drive, after you get out of the LA area, is mostly through desert - locals generally find this to be a boring drive, but if you are from a part of the world where you don't have desert, you might find it quite interesting.

In any case, see my response to your thread about LA to San Francisco for more info on local LA area airports and why using one of the alternative airports to LAX can save you time and hassle. In Las Vegas there's only one airport, LAS.

Think the OP is going on a RTW trip and asked this question on many forums. But I suggest to go to a library first and pick up guide books. Nobody knows what's the "best" way is for a stranger.

I'm merely asking for other people's opinions.

I figured it would be quicker and easier to get first hand advice from people who would know more about it.

But thank you for the helpful answers :)

The "best" way as stated above is very subjective and people will give very different answers based on when you are going, who is traveling, how old you are etc.

A family of 6, driving a rental car is probably "the best" as 6 airfares can be expensive.

A 21 year old, flying is probably the best since it is most likely cheaper than a car rental.

A 21 year old on a tight budget, the Megabus or Bolt Bus, where you can sometimes get LA to Vegas as cheap as $10 one way, is probably "the best".

So point being, in order to get the best answers as you plan your trip, give as much detail as you can so people can answer accordingly.
