Where to spend the 4th of July?

So our roadtrip starts on the 26th from San Diego. Where would be best to spend the 4th of July, Vegas or San Fran? This will dictate which route we take obviously.

I'd spend July 4th in Las Vegas, but I hope you have your room already.

Couchsurfing or airbnb is the plan.

I'm going to guess you are from Birmingham, UK not Birmingham Alabama.

If I'm right then I'm going to say "neither." If you're trying to get a sense of Independence Day in the US then small towns do a better job than big cities. There will be a parade, maybe a big picnic around the town square, perhaps the county fair and then fireworks. Big cities aren't much more than the obligatory evening fireworks shows.

Vegas over San Francisco abbreviated by most locals as SF.

Yes, Birmingham UK.

If I did stay in a big city it would be with a family via couchsurfing or airbnb. By staying with locals I thought that would give us a proper local experience.

Not really, especially in Las Vegas.

If your goal is to experience July 4th through a local's eyes then I wouldn't be in Las Vegas, that would be to party on July 4th and experience great fireworks.

I agree with WD that a smaller place, like Monterey CA or Cayucos CA would be my picks.

Flagstaff could be nice, Williams is probably too small.
