Bohemian towns on the West Coast

Hi I am doing a road trip from San Francisco to San Diego and I'm looking for some places to stop with a slightly alternative vibe. Somewhere with a Bohemian feel, some raw/veggie food, some good music, some individual shops, some nice places to sit and watch the world go by etc etc. Does anyone have any ideas? I've never been to America before, somebody has recommended Santa Cruz....

Yes, Santa Cruz would be it.

I lived there for close to one year some time ago and had to move because of this very vibe...I couldn't stand it.

To visit though it's a great place to visit!

Big Sur comes to mind, but it really isn't the kind of place where you can sit somewhere and watch the world go by. It's a place to commune with nature.

It's tiny and a bit isolated, but maybe Ojai.

I was also going to say Ojai!

There are also neighborhoods in San Diego that fit that description.

A lot of places on the CA coast fit this criteria to some extent. Vegetarian, raw, organic, etc. food is ubiquitous. Most towns have independent shops and independent cafes/coffeehouses. Santa Cruz probably has the most of what you are looking for.

Harmony is certainly Bohemian, but if you blink, you'll miss it, haha!! Still a cool place to stop for a spell while winding one's way down the coast.

Avila Beach used to be quite Bohemian, but lost that charm when they bulldozed the town and re-built it in the Santa Barbara fashion. I really hated the "new" Avila for a long time, but it's actually grown on me the last few years. The pedestrian friendly promenade by the pier makes for great people watching from the Custom House restaurant's patio or Mr. Rick's bar.
