Las Vegas to San Francisco with an overnight stay

Have posted previously but this topic header makes more sense now. My orginal plan was to drive from LV to Yosemite and then to SF in March, which i now know is completely impractical due to distance and weather. Can anyone advise me on an alternative plan? We leave Las vegas early in the morning and dont have to be in SF until the evening of the following day allowing for an overnight stop somewhere. I have been reading that the coastal route may be a good option. I dont mind doing up to around 7 (8 at a push) hours driving a day. I would like to see death valley along the way and then stop overnight. Can anyone suggest a good route and an idea on where is roughly halfway. Any suggestions on places to stop overnight would be greatly appreciated. Yep you are right us Brits have no idea on the grand scale of distance over there. Any help would b really appreciated.

Its been a long time since I've done this but I think it is doable. Get up early in LV and then to Death Valley. Leave Death Valley for Lone Pine on route 395, where you can spend the night. Then Lone Pine to SF. The problem is that route 120, the Tioga Pass road thru Yosemite, and the shorter route, won't be open because of snow. So you'll have to go further north to connect with route 50 which takes you over the Sierras to I80. If you can spring an extra day you can stop in Tahoe and pick up 50 there. Definitely worth the time- and it has casinos too! The other problem is that if it snows, 50 can be shut down or you may need chains. Then it will take a lot longer. If you follow the weather in LV, you can see if snow is forcast. If so, then you can take the interstate thru the desert and do it in a long day.

Suggest you go from La Vegas to Baker and then via 127 through Death Valley around to Ridgecrest/China Lake. Stop over night here. Then next day drive through to Fresno - and if you can stop over night even better - because from here you can go see the giant redwood (sequoia's) - awesome sight and Christmas Card scenes. You can drive from Fresno next day to Yosemite national Park - again awesome views.....and then onto San Francisco.

We did the trip in reverse last Easter - never to be forgotten - we saw 25 miles of orange groves (tastiest ones we've ever eaten too!!).

Better to take your time and enjoy it all rather than rush the trip to get to SFO.
