Don't know exactly where you're headed, but you should be able to get to Conifer in 90 minutes from the car rentals at DIA, although you'll hit heavy rush hour traffic on I-70 near the old Stapleton. If you're going to Conifer, I can't see any reason why you would stop in Lakewood, it's only about 20 miles up to Conifer.
If it were me I'd stop for dinner somewhere first to wait out the worst of the rush hour traffic, then drive for an hour.
Thanks - that's probably a good idea. How late does the Denver rush last in the evening?
8 o'clock? ;-) No, not really! I don't live there so my perception is probably not accurate. When we visit we try to avoid arriving or driving very far from 4:45 to 6:30. You could probably do a forum search for Denver rush hour for more info.
If I were you, I would take E-470 from the airport. It's a toll road, but allows you to avoid I-70 during rush hour. E-470 then turns into C-470 (non-toll) and will take you around the city and there's an exit for 285 right off of C-470. Going that way, assuming you don't get delayed in traffic on C-470 would put you near Conifer around 6:30 or 7ish.
Thanks - sounds like the same everywhere...
Looking at the map that looks like the best option - thanks for the suggestion
I would make sure you have an idea where you would stop. There are not any typical chain hotels along the route and it starts getting pretty rural.
If you pass Conifer, you won't tons of choices along the route without knowing where you are going.
I drive that stretch of road several times per year and I am struggling to think of places to stay! I am sure there are b&bs for sure but I would have a little bit more of an idea in advance.
I am sure there are places in Fairplay but that might be further than you planned.
That's precisely what was beginning to dawn on me....there seems to be little accommodation listed once one gets on to the 285. Probably best to stop somewhere around Littleton.
