Roadtrip to Vail May 21st-31st

Our plans so far are as follows:

We will be probably be arriving in Colorado on Friday, May 21st and have a day to kill before checking into our resort in Vail on Saturday, May 22nd. We will stay there until we check out in the morning on Saturday, May 29th. We were planning on spending the rest of Saturday and Sunday (30th-31st) exploring other parts of Colorado before heading home on Monday. We were interested in seeing Aspen (will Independence Pass be open and is it worth driving?). We were also interested in driving to Colorado Springs to see Pike's Peak and the Garden of the Gods. We also might stop in Denver if we have time. Any other suggestions on where to go or what to see? We are up for driving as long as the time allows. We have never been to Colorado or the mountains before so and suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

I just read that Independence Pass is scheduled to open May 27 weather permitting. You'll want to check http://cotrip.org/home.htm for updates. If it is open it is definitely worth driving.
