Suggestion need for Route\Stops\Activities - 2wks in Aug !!

Try to plan a summer trip with 2 adults + 9 yr boy.

Fly to Denver then rent a car.

Only has been Keystone 4 yr ago once during Spring Break.

Would love to see the summer scenery.

Think about visit Vail, Aspen, Colorado Spring some place has hot spring?

Would local experts suggests some:

1. if we stay Vail a few days, Aspen a few days, what other day trip we could make?

2. any place we shouldn't miss?

3. what the good activities? Is there anything like Monkido (www.wildplay.com/elements/monkido#access)? My 9 yr boy loved it when we visited Whistler 2 yr ago.

Thx ahead

some good places to consider: Estes Park and RMNP, Colorado Springs and all its activities is a wonderful choice, as is nearby Canon City and Royal Gorge Bridge and Park:

Aspen and Vail will both have lots of kids' activities. If you go to the visitor websites or the ski resort websites and click on "summer" you'll find some examples. Their summer schedules for this year won't be up yet, but you'll get a good idea of the kinds of things they offer.

I like the hot springs pool at Glenwood, too, but you might also consider Avalanche Ranch near Redstone, or a trip to Buena Vista/Nathrop to play at Mount Princeton Hot Springs.

YMCA of the Rockies has two mountain camp locations with all kinds of family activities. This is always one of the most highly recommended family vacation spots. With two weeks, you could certainly consider a few days at one of the YMCA locations.

Thx hatchpal4u & misspWestSlop.

I booked the flight 0810-0825. After an initial research about the links your two provided, came up some places to see, I'm thinking to make 2 lodging reservations , then make day trips,

would you advise which 2 places should be my lodging bases has nice pool? (my son loves swimming:)

Is there too many places on my list to see in 2 wks? I don't want to be too rash, it suppose to be a relaxing vacation? If it's too many which place I should cut? If not enough places to see, which one should I add?

Interested Places to see so far:

1. Estes Park, CO

2. Cañon City, CO 81212

3. Glenwood Springs, CO 81601

4.Pikes Peak Cog Railway

5. Seven Falls

6. Vail

7. Aspen

8. Mt Princeton Hot Springs

9. Redstone, CO 81623

Some of the places you have listed are really much too far apart to do as day trips from only two base points.

You do have time in two weeks to visit all the locations you've mentioned, but you would need to do it as more of a road trip, making a loop from place to place, staying two to four days in each location.

For example:

Drive from the Denver airport to Colorado Springs for two or three nights, (or spend a night in Denver before heading for Colorado Springs) then through Canon City to see the Royal Gorge and on to Mt. Princeton Hot Springs for two nights. Then, if you want to drive over Independence Pass, make Aspen your next stop for a couple of nights. Redstone could be a day trip from either Aspen or Glenwood Springs, or you could make Avalanche Ranch your base to visit Aspen and Glenwood. If you didn't want to drive over Independence Pass, you could go from Nathrop (Mt. Princeton Hot Springs--be sure to go to St. Elmo ghost town and hike to Agnes Vaille Falls while you are there) through Leadville to Interstate 70 and visit Vail on the way to Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Redstone. After that, your next stop would be to backtrack through Vail on I-70 and then: either (1) Grand Lake or nearby (or YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch) and then drive Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park to Estes Park or (2) back toward Denver and then to Estes Park. Your last stop could be an overnight or two in Denver for any sightseeing you wanted to do there before your departure.

With the other things you are doing, I think you could easily skip staying at Vail, maybe just visiting it for a little while on your way through.

If that still sounds like a little too much driving and moving around for you, then I would scale back your trip a little, perhaps making your three bases Colorado Springs, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, and Aspen/Redstone/Glenwood. (You could still visit the Royal Gorge on the way from Colorado Springs to Mt. Princeton if you wish) Or, visit Estes Park, Aspen/Glenwood/Redstone and skip the more southern locations.

Is rd 82 from Twin Lake to Aspen open in Aug?

I see it in Google map, but when the direction tells use rd 70 to make a big circle?

Is compact car good to drive rd 82 if it is open, or we need SUV in Aug drive?

Thx

Hwy 82 goes over Independence Pass and is open in August. A compact car is fine, it is a paved road. It's a spectacular drive not to be missed: http://www.independence-pass.com/

we enjoyed the Quality Inn in Canon City, great warm outdoor pool and area as well as several hot tub whirlpools housed within one room on the way out to the pool. Some doors have nameplates of the stars that stayed in those rooms during movie filming.

qualityinn.com/hotel-canon_city-colorado-CO0…

In Glenwood Springs we highly recommend the Cedar Lodge:

http://www.cedarlodgemotel.net/ great price compared to other pricey lodgins in the area. The pool was wonderful, the view was grand, the grounds were mature and well maintained and the owners helpful and friendly. There's also an indoor pool that was nice and a continental breakfast and workout area as well.

Colorado Springs The BW Academy has a large indoor pool, great indoor lobby and breakfast according to the website photos, info. and reviews on TA.....however we chose Drury Inn across the street for all the great free food during the day/eve...the recliners were nice too. The pool isn't as large but the kids enjoyed the indoor/outdoor pool where you could swim under the wall to the outside. But if a larger pool is impt. go for the BW Academy across the street. The Drury is next door to two of my favorite chains--The Cracker Barrel and Famous Daves.

If we go back the kids want to go to the Drury Inn which we loved but I'm equally curious and impressed by BW Academy. They had the better price (but I got Drury to match it which is ultimately why we ended up going with it)
