Christmas Ski Trip in Colorado

We want to take the kids skiing (they will be 11) for the 1st time during Christmas Break this year. Aspen and Vail look appealing because they have their own airport near by but I have heard a lot of good things about Breckenridge too. Which town is the best choice for a family friendly ski trip and any lodging recommendations?

One Vail does not have an airport, the airport is in Eagle. Why not look at Steamboat? Hayden airport is very close, fun town and fun mountain.

Even in 100 degree temps and CO on fire planning now for holiday vacation is good idea. Many places get booked way in advance. If you're looking to fly in close to a ski resort also consider Aspen. Airport in the middle of the 4 mountain resort. However, like most places during the holidays not for the budget minded family.

re travel distances: Eagle airport abt 40 min from Vail. Hayden airport abt 30 min.

I agree that Steamboat would be a great option, just one of many! Durango is very family friendly and has an airport, plus you have the winter train ride that adds to the Christmas cheer. (They even have a Polar Express ride) It might be less expensive during Christmas than some places, plus you have the option of driving to Wolf Creek Ski area, too, if the snow is better there.

The Gunnison/Crested Butte airport is another option for a Crested Butte ski vacation. Crested Butte is typically cheaper and always less crowded than any of the resorts listed above, especially during the holidays.

Most flights connect in Denver, but some of the smaller regional airports serving the ski areas have air organizations that subsidize direct flights during ski season. For example: http://flytelluride-montrose.com/airports.htm Each resort will have some type of a "getting here" tab on their websites.

The good news is that there's no single best choice! If you would like to give more information about your budget, length of trip, the kinds of activities or "feel" you want your trip to have...you may get better suggestions. For example, if you are coming for one week and want to ski every day, your best choice might be different from someone who wants to come for a week and ski once or twice, then add other activities.

As they always say, ask 3 different people where to ski in Colorado and you are likely to get 3 different answers. Reason, they all offer the opportunity for a great time!

Your budget will help narrow down the options as well as they type of experience you are wanting. Luxury, Town, Small Town, Resort? Like to try a bunch of resorts or ski in ski out? Are you going to ski each day or try other activities?

The more you can tell us, the more we can help.

Sorry for the vague original post, here are some more details

This will be our Christmas i.e. no other gifts etc and we have been saving up for it so although I am not thinking luxury necessarily I want it to be a nice resort/condo (preferably ski in/ski out) for convenience.

It would be great if there were some other family activities in the area because although we plan on skiing, we will want a break from it some since this is the first time for the kids.

A town to go into at night for the occasional dinner or walking around would be nice too but since it is just the fam, we don't really need a "party" scene for this trip.
