Stop over on US 50 Advice. Salida - Gunnison ?

Hi ! I am planning a road trip, and need advice regarding where to stay along the US50.

My trip is in Sept. I will be coming ifrom Kansas on US50 . I was thinking of staying overnight in Salida or Gunnison, before continuing on towards Montrose. Then S on 550 to stay in the Durango or Cortes areas.

So ideally I'd like a town with a few good bars and good food options.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

Of the two, I would pick Salida. Otherwise, I would make a detour and stay overnight in Crested Butte. Both places meet your criteria.

I'd play it by ear. I wouldn't drive over Monarch Pass in the dark just for the scenery alone. So plot out your trip, and see if it will be dark by the time you get past Salida. If so, I'd stay there.

Try Days Inn in Salida. Special place!

Salida is very cute, I'd not want to stay right along 50 though.

http://www.salidapalacehotel.com/ is more appealing to me than a typical chain experience.

I agree with Alli. "Days Inn" and "Special Place" is an oxymoron, IMHO.

I'm a fan of Gunnison and the surrounding area...too bad Crested Butte wasn't out of the way that's a great place to stop! Enjoy Salida.

Tet, it's a Days Inn. Nice furniture and a friendly owner does not change the fact that it's a chain hotel within earshot/eyeshot of a busy road. Alli had a great suggestion. Otherwise, the OP can look at hotel reviews and judge for themselves.
