Best Destinations in Colorado?

My wife and I are thinking about visiting Colorado in July. We've never been before and trying to figure out where we should go.

We are looking for a city/resort with amazing mountain views, horseback riding, hiking trails etc. but not far from shopping/restaurants. Put simply we don't want to "rough it"!

Beaver Creek? Their slogan is "Not Exactly Roughing It"

What is your budget like? While Beaver Creek is "Not Exactly Roughing It" the rates are high even in the summers.

A great resource for finding lots of great places in CO beyond the ski resorts is the CO state tourism guide. http://www.colorado.com/ It's very interactive, covers the entire state, and even has info on discounts and specials. Plus a calendar of events (there may be places you want to avoid during busy festivals or take part in them).

We are a big state with much to see. Dive in and take a look. Happy planning.

Are you driving from Austin or flying?

Durango and Telluride would be front runners in my mind if you're driving from Austin, with Crested Butte and Pagosa Springs not far behind. If you're flying in from Denver, then Breckenridge, Estes Park, and Steamboat Springs would be good starting points. Gotta include Aspen, too. So many great choices!

I will add my personal favorite, Keystone, if you are wanting a more resort type of atmosphere. You can't go wrong with any of the above suggestions.

We'll be flying into Denver. Thanks to everyone for the help! Any recommendations on specific places to stay? We're looking for something around $150/night.

At 150.00 Beaver Creek proper is most likely out. At Keystone you could easily find a condo that meets your budget. Keystone has a great free shuttle system making all locations pretty easy, though the areas of River Run, Mountain House and the Village are the best for ease of coming and going.

If hiking and mountain views are a high priority I would go with Estes Park, next door to Rocky Mountain National Park. It's a great drive up there as well, from Denver. You might want to spend a day/night in Boulder on the way.
